MS IE open -> improves ASv6 download speed?

Featured Replies

OK, don't think I've come across this one before but having MS Internet Explorer open seems to greatly improve my ASv6 weather download speed. I've noted that ever since ASv6 came out, ASv6 downloads from either server1 or 2 took a minute or two to complete. I always thought Damien must have throttle the servers again. But today, I happened to be using MS IE to surf when I started ASV6 and the download only took 5 or 10 seconds. The kind of broadband rate you would expect. This is still true after updateding to SU4. I can even start ASv6 first with slow downloads, then start IE and watch it drastically speed-up as soon as IE is done loading. I do have ASv6 on a WideClient PC with no known connection issues on a Comcast broadband connection. Weather updates to the WideFS server always seem fine, this is just on the download side. It's almost as if ASv6 is using IE as some sort of Proxy or something. FWIW, I'm using WinXPsp2 on the wideclient with standard Firewall, no proxy, standard Netgear router with standard 192 class-c private IP on LAN side. I really don't think this has anything to do with my LAN or being a WideFS setup. Something between ASv6 and WinXP. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.v/r, Al

Hi,And here we thought it was only with/without FS04 running! I have Comcast and notice no difference if IE is open or not. Not sure what the explaination is! Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter

Did you try opening IE after ASv6 starts a download? I just tried it again and it didn't speed up when ASv6 was opened first, but then I closed and reopened IE and ASv6 sped (is that a word?) up again?Edit: I noticed that even with an IE browser open, once I started FS9 on the WideFS PC, ASv6 slowed down again. During this slow update, I just opened another browser session and the updated rate increased again.v/r,Al

Personally I find the weather d/l speed is dictated by the time of day, i.e. it always seems to slow down here around 6pm and stays that way for a few hours...probably due to the surge of simmers using the server after having come home from work here in the UK & all over Europe? You get surges again late at night here, when the simmers in the US have just got home from work, eager to fire up FS9! During daytime working hours here though, especially early on (when most of the US is sleeping)it seems to download really quickly! Just a thought...

Noted; but this is obvious the second the browser finishes loading a page. No application should affect another applicatiion in this manner.Jim, would you please point this out to Damien to see if it means something to him? Thanks...Al

Hi,It's fairly normal behavior actually, as we are using the MSIE ActiveX internet controls for our communication. This is all based on IE and uses it directly for http comms. If the IE application is open, you might get faster due to higher process priority. It would depend on your system performance settings, IE settings, any IE add-ons, firewall/security software, etc... FWIW I don't notice any big difference in speed on 4 internal test systems here.. maybe a very slight one.It does appear that those who note a speed improvement with IE open also note slower download speeds in general? There really may be another app/IE add-on causing this. Spyware and general IE hijacking stuff (very common) can indeed be related to this as well.. make sure your system is clean.Best,
