New version soon? And other Qs.

Featured Replies

I'm considering purchasing AS6.5 for FSX. Might some kind soul answer a few questions for me pretty please? I once purchased ActiveSky 3.xxx (I believe it was) for 30 dollars. Literally 3 weeks later, the new and improved AS 4.0 debuted with improved weather rendering technologies at a discount price of 25 dollars for current users. My version was very soon very obsolete.1) Can we expect a version 7 soon? Is 6.5 just an interim fix? I'd like to hold of purchasing if the newest version 7 is in beta.2) AS, like any other weather software used to encounter problems when loading new weather data into FS. Does AS now solve the problem of the "clear weather flash" when loading new weather data? This was the real kicker for me.Thank you for you kind response,Wooly

Hi,Thanks for your consideration!1) Soon is relative of course... We are always working on new technologies and new versions. I can say that we DO NOT have a new version in beta! We just finished 6.5 beta! Of course we are limited in what we can say about new developments for various reasons. It's really the same as always: yes there's new stuff coming, but we don't know exactly when and how it will be made available...2) Pretty much all such scenarios in this department have been improved significantly. Weather generally doesn't flash when being updated. There are some rare exceptions, in certain oceanic areas, with very few reporting points, for example, when you're suppression range is lower than 200-250. But for the most part things are very smooth here. I'll leave it to others to comment more about this...We understand your point about upgrades and technologies becoming obsolete. That's just the way it works with this stuff though. Fortunately we are actively improving things by using our resources that our customers contribute greatly to. It is always better to have new improved technology than to have stale outdated technology, right? It does come at a price of course. While we always try to give as many free improvements as possible (just look at ASV purchasers who have had 3 major upgrades and dozens of minor updates provided absolutely free over the past couple years), there is a limit because we need resources in order to continue development in the direction we want to take things. We are confident that our customers will not be disappointed.Best,

Thank you for the prompt and thorough reply. Your reasons for not announcing future versions/features are understandable.I would love to hear from other users with regard to the smooth weather transitions.

I was experiencing flashes with FSX real world weather, and I still get them with AS6.5, but it is not as severe. It got so bad in the real world weather, that I stopped flying with weather set to anything but clear skys. After I copied over the ASG clouds, and updated to AS6.5, things are much better. AS6.5 is definitely a must have program!Bill

From my experience, I'd have to say that ASv6/6.5 is a definite must have. While I can't comment about FSX and any versions prior to ASv6 because I have used neither, what I can do is say that the difference between FS's own weather and ASv6 generated weather is hugely noticeable.Initially, I was having problems with ASv6 and dramatic visibility changes, but with the help of the great folks here it became apparent that the problems were down to limits in FS's handling of visibility and the limited data being sent out by weather stations in the area I fly from. I very rarely get these visibility shifts now and even rarer are 'flashing' changes in weather. I can't say that they don't happen, but I think you'll find it usually due to old Wx data and not any limitation of ASv6 and they mostly go unnoticed.A recent flight I made between two airfields in the UK had several Wx condition changes en-route and not a single one flashed - the whole experience was a set of seamless transitions. For the money, it's great value and I think anyone purchasing it would not be disappointed.Vox
