My graphic card needs help!

Featured Replies

I have a Radeaon 9800 Pro graphic card and by the looks of my screen it's just about done for! I am getting these pink and green horizontal and vertical lines on the computer screen interfering with the images. These lines come and go, for instance if I turn off the computer for a bit then turn it back on the lines will be gone but they eventually come back. Like now I have the avsim fourms page up but I can see bits of my desktop image in the lines Im describing. The lines are not screen related because I hooked up a old monitor and the lines appear on that monitor also.Any ideas what could be going on? I am having a friend who knows alot about computers look at my computer but that wil not happen until monday.

sounds like the card is toast is the fan running if not it may have over heated try cleaning the fan with air try new drivers or better yet it sounds like a good time to get that BFG 6800 GT OC

I don't know if the fan is running or not I have 7 fans in my computer and I don't know which one is on the graphic card. (I am very novice when it come to computer parts)If the card is toast it sure didn't last long at all! I just installed this card in December of last year.

Stating the obvious - the Graphics card fan is on the Graphics card.Open the box and look to the rear of the PC you will see the Graphics card- usually in the highest slot (The AGP slot) - its immediately opposite to where you plug the monitor in ( on the outside) ..... there will be a small fan (about 4 or 5 cms across) on it - is it turning properly when the PC is switched on?( Check the rotation both at switch on and after a while) Is it clean? - there may be an accumulation of dust on the heat sink(this applies equally to any other fans - keeping things clean helps keep temps down). Hi.It could also be one of your RAM chips on the graphics card. When they start going faulty they display the symptoms you are describing.

My computer is one that has the clear side panel so you can see the inside of the computer and looking in I can see 3 of the fans. The 3 fans I see are working but they do have some dust on them. Maybe I just need to clean it and I will not need to buy another graphic card. I will look into this stuff more tomorrow, it's late here now.

If you can wait, have your computer savvy friend remove the card from it's slot, and check that the fan/heatsink is firmly mounted. I've seen occaisions where it has worked loose due to excessive heat drying out the paste/bonding used to secure the heatsink to the core. If this happens, the core (main GPU chip) gets hotter and hotter and will eventually fry itself. What you see now is a symptom of an overheating card. This could be due to the fan not working anymore, or it may be related to a more Radeon specific issue. If the heatsink is carefully removed, you'll see a small metal 'ring' or shim that helps supprt and steady the heatsink over the core GPU. Problem here is that often the shim is not quite 'true'...it may be laying slightly raised at one edge. This means that the heatsink is not in full contact with the GPU and so heat builds up excessively, and rapidly. If you're feeling brave, you can usualy get a thumbnail under the edge of this shim, and with a little flick, it'll pop-off. If you clean up any dust and old dry past, and re-apply a small amount of fresh heatsink compound to the top of the core GPU and carefully replace the heatsink, you'll find that now, without that shim, proper contact is made and that the heatsink can do what it was designed to do!! Provided that the core hasn't been permanently damaged already, and it sounds like that for you, it may not be, then you shouldn't get the nasty green/pink blobs anymore! This waas a big talking point over at the forums on Rage3d.com about a year ago when everyone waas finding out about this issue...me included. It sounds scary, and perhaps difficult, but honestly, it is neither, and your card may well thank you for it :)Of course, if it is as someone else suggested, a failing memory chip, then a new card is needed! But, I would suggest checking out the heatsink issue first, as in my experience, it is most likely to do with a bad fan, or the shim.Good luck :)

Have you contacted the manufacturer? If you bought the card less than a year ago, they might replace it. Regardless of the stated warantee, they might recognize a defect in design or assembly and give you a new card. They can't afford to have their reputation hurt. Unlike Microsoft, they're in a constant see-saw battle with a rival, so consumer opinion of their product is very important to them. And if they do replace the card for you, let us all know. Companies deserve positive feedback in these forums when they do a good job.I hope Radeon is the kind of company that supports their product. Of course, I just installed a new Radeon card yesterday...

Thanks for all the reply's :-) I have decided to wait until tomorrow and have my friend look at the computer for me. He was the one who put the computer together for me and knows alot about this stuff.About 2 days before these lines appeared I noticed FS2004 was getting blurry textures, I guess that was a sign of things going bad.PS: I will let you guys know if I need another graphic card and what Radeon says about it.

Try it in another computer if it don

I just rma'd my 9700Pro Sapphire card. It was nearly two years old and started doing the same thing. Suspect the ram on the card was going bad. The Alienware Warranty was one year; but the Manufacturer Warranty (Sapphire) was 2 years on my particular card as it was oem from Alienware. Nothing like getting a new card free. Only problem is there's about a three week turn around via the rma process. No hassles at all. Just have to wait. I couldn't wait, so I bought a 9800Pro to replace it. At least now, I got a spare card just in case.
