Intel or AMD

Featured Replies

This has probaly been asked before but here goes anyway.I'm in the market for a new system and it will be an Alienware or XPS system I go for. My questions is will an AMD based system or Intel be best for FS.The reason I ask this is that I have used AMD systems since my PIII 450. My current system was I thought quite good but even now with a fresh install and faster hard drive perforamce is at best OK. The strange part is my brother system which is straight from Dell looks fantastic. My PC is an XP2800+ , 1gb ddr@333 , 2x80gb 7200rpm hard drives , FX5700 VTD256mb 8xAGP g/card. My brother bought a Dell 4600 with Intel 2.8ghz , 512mb ddr@333 , 1x60gb 7200rpm hard drive , fx5200 128mb 8xAGP g/card. Both machines run XP pro with SP2. His machine runs FS alot smooth and better image quality????. The most annoying thing is I have disabled services, virus scanning, Firewall and other background stuff. He on the other hand has it all running plus 2 or 3 chat progs , desktop themes and other useless stuff. The only thing I can think of is it might be the AMD/Intel difference that sets us apart. I hope someone can enlighten me a little cause if I hear him going on about how much better his PC is without all the tweaking and money mine gets I'll punch his lights out (again) :-mad

i don't think the point is whether AMD or Pentium is better for FS, the question is quite simple and the answer obvious; if the Pentium is faster than the AMD it will most likely be best for FS, as in the case you give an example, but had your AMD proccessor been faster than your brothers, then the AMD would have proved the better for the job. generally an AMD will run faster than a Pentium of the same clock speed, but an AND XP2800+ is not the same speed or the equal of a Pentium 2.8ghz i think you need an XP3000+ to match that pentium. if you want to get a new system as opposed to just putting a quicker CPU in yours i would suggest going for a 64 bit AMD based one.

That is very odd findings indead. I don

This is a simply impossible question to answer. Why you ask?, because people who own an AMD chip will say AMD, people who own Intel will say Intel, its exactly the same as the Nvidia/ATI debate. Its not as simple as "his has Intel, it runs faster than mine", there are 101,000 different variables that can make a lot of difference between 2 , even with exact hardware, systems. In my experiance Intel CPU's always have the edge on AMD chips, but its not a great margin by far. Also you are comparing an XP2800 (which is somewhere around 2200mhz?) against a "true" 2800mhz system.Dan.

No that is not the case. Sometimes you end up with the wrong dog really. It
