not sure the vid card is the bottleneck, you could be suffering with your sound and CPU aswell. that said of those 2 cards the 6600 would be the best bet (but try and get the GT version), the 9600 is hardly any any better than your old G4 ti.

Maybe you should scan the market for a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. I got my SAPPHIRE for under $200. I've got advices from many people sayng that the "Pro" tag means a lot more than the 256MB Memory.The card performs amazingly for the price, but I found it hard to set up. If I were you, I would keep the Ti4200 and invest in a faster processor first..mind you, I am biased... P4-2.8, 768 Meg TAM, Ti4200-128.
