April 8, 200521 yr I am very pleased with the performance of this card. There's really only one issue remaining at this stage: in spot view only, when I look at distant mountains, even with aniso switched on, I get a certain amount of shimmer of various peaks and mountainsides. Not all of them, just some of them. They "quiver" like jello being shaken in a glass bowl. When I look at them from the 2-D or 3-D cockpit, they are stable and normal to the eye.Why is this and is it fixable?Thanks.JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
April 8, 200521 yr I get it on both my current (specs below) and old rig (Athlon 3200+, 9800 Pro). I suspect this is an FS2004 "feature". April 8, 200521 yr Author OK, thanks Reset, perhaps I won't worry about it then. I know what you mean.Thank heavens for these hi-end video cards. Finally, I can fly FS9 and see the a/c and world as it was meant to be seen. Can you comment on the difference performance (FPS :-)) wise between both of your systems?
April 9, 200521 yr "I get a certain amount of shimmer of various peaks and mountainsides"Try limiting your visibility (in the sim, or better yet, using a registered version of FSUIPC) to around 30 miles.Greg
April 9, 200521 yr Author 30 miles?! Wow, it's always been at a minimum of 80 miles ! Currently it's 100 miles with 60 miles for clouds. I'm getting frames of 100-120/fps in the POSKY 744 at this setting at 1600x1200 res. So you'd think one should be able to see distant mountains normally. It's nuts !Well, OK, I'll try to change it and see what that does.JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
April 9, 200521 yr Hakkie,Heres a thread where I upgraded my CPU from Athlon 3200+ to A64 3700+ (resultant speeds that is):http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ing_type=searchHere's the thread where I upgraded from the 9800 Pro to the 6800 GT Ultra (again, resultant speeds):http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ype=search#5853In short, the CPU upgrade made quite a big difference with performance (>50%). Whilst performance-wise the video card upgrade was negligible (see attached), there was quite a leap in graphics quality by being able to run at 8xAA/16xAF.GaryEdit: first attachment attempt didn't work. 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
April 9, 200521 yr Author Thanks. April 10, 200521 yr Hi JS,Yes, I agree with Greg. Limit your visibility to 30 miles and all will be well. When the visibility setting is, say, unlimited, the sim, to my mind , looks very unnatural. You need the haze in the distance to mimick reality. If you want more control with vis settings varying with altitude you need the registered version of FSUIPC. Difficult to understand why many folk still remain content to live without it. If you are truly seeking the 'As Real as It Gets' experience then installing FSUIPC is absolutely mandatory IMHO.Mike
April 10, 200521 yr Author I do have the reg'd FSUIPC and I set it it to graduated vis from 3000 to 25000', with a max vis of 100nm at 25000'. So, should I limit the vis at FL250 to 30NM now?JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
April 11, 200521 yr Hi JS,Try these settings in FSUIPC.ini (open in Notepad). Remember to make a copy of the original file first.LowerVisAltitude=6000UpperVisAltitude=25000UpperVisibility=6000SmoothVisibility=YesVisibilitySmoothness=3MinimumVisibility=0MaximumVisibilityFewClouds=6000MaximumVisibility=3000MaximumVisibilityOvercast=2000MaximumVisibilityRainy=1000SetVisUpperAlt=NoVisUpperAltLimit=6000VisSmoothingDelay=0VisSmoothAirborneOnly=NoSee how that looks. I guess at the end of the day it's all a matter of taste. I like to fly at lower altitudes most of the time and these settings suit me fine. Just experiment with the settings until you are happy.Mike
