Anyone using a real aviation headset w/FS?

Featured Replies

I've just got a David Clark headset and was thinking of trying it out in FS using this adapter: http://www.pcaviator.com/shop/viewAProduct.php?pid=126 -- has anyone had any experience with this setup? I'm a tad leary, because on the only site I've visited that actually posts user reviews, one guy liked it a lot and another said the sound quality was junk and ended up returning it. I'm just looking for some more feedback.thanks,

Why would you want to use a real one? they are expensive. David Clarks are good headsets... if they have active noise cancellation.they would be tad pricy too. You may as well sell it on ebay and get a regular headset for flight sims.I have a real head set which I use for real flying. Its too bulky and tiring to wear them for Flight sims.

Hi Bill,A few years ago a friend tried to use his DC's with his simming set-up and was not pleased with the results. Not sure precisely what he did, but I do know that he breadboarded some kind of circuitry between headset and computer. He didn't move ahead with the idea... ended up just ordering a cheapo headset to use for simming. But your link looks interesting. Certainly seems worth a try. The interface uses 9V power, which would be good. If nothing else give it a try and if you're not happy return the thing.A good sound card would also be recommended. Something in the Creative (yeck, never thought I'd being suggesting their stuff!) line would be good. Great hardware--- it's their drivers that are ugly.Just read in the other forum that you've begun flight training. Congrats on that!! I can understand you wanting to use your DC's for simming now. If you do purchase the headset adapter plaese post back here with your opinions. I might want to do the deed so I can use my 13XL ENC.Good luck,Greg

Hi Greg,Yep, the DCs and adapter are separately winging their way towards me now. I'm not sure I'll like the results but I'm willing to give it a try. I'm very happy about the headset -- got what seemed like a pretty good deal on Ebay -- but I'm still not sold on how the adapter will work. Whatever the result, I'll post back here with my findings.@Manny -- I'm using the aviation headset because I've already bought it for my real flight training, and I'd like to close the reality loop a tad more with my FS.

Yes, that looks interesting as well. I had thought about getting that one, but it seems to only work with regular stereo miniplug PC headphones. If you get it, let me know what you think though.thanks,

Hi guys,I have no problem with my DC H10-13.4 headset, I use it with EZ-Flight BS-12 adapter. I got it at pilotproductMike

There is also a do-it-yourself schematic at http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/adapter.htm that adapts GA headsets for PC use. I am using this circuit with a Telex 100-TRA hand microphone in my Cessna 172R simulator and it seems to work very well. You can also get standard GA microphone jacks at Aircraft Spruce for a few bucks a piece to complete the project.-Mike

Thanks, Mike. Say, do you have any pics of your 172R simulator you could share? I'm interested in working on something like that.thanks,

Okay, I've had a couple of days to try out the DC headset with the converter box on my PC, and the results are, for me, not great. The sound quality is okay, and if I could jack the volume up a bit I might even be happy with this configuration. However, I was never able to get the ATC volume above a whisper, even with it turned all the way up in FS, the volume output as loud as possible on my PC and the headset volume at full. I don't know if it's the wiring or the internals of the converter, but there just isn't enough of a signal to drive the headset in a clear, full-volume fashion. I'm probably going to ask for a refund on the converter box. The headset will be great for real flying, but I'm sticking with my tried and true computer headset when sim flying. Just thought I'd update for anyone who's interested.thanks,
