June 23, 200520 yr While intuitive contrary I have found that the minimum setting of 4 Mb for may AGP aperture in BIOS is best. By this I mean that with a setting of 128Mb (1/2 of RAM memory) looking out the side window of the RealAir Cessna 172 the view stutters. That is it appears to run at a slow frames/second rate despite the indicated FPS being above 30. However, if I set the AGP aperture in BIOS to 4Mb (my lowest setting) the same view is smooth. I can detect no drop in FPS and no other negative factors. I saw this on my old GeForce MX400 64mb video card but assumed it was something in the old card. Now running Radeon/ATI 9800SE 128mb and find the unusual setting continues to offer a much smoother side view. AMD2600, ECS KT-600 mother board.Dick Boley @KLBE regards, Dick near Pittsburgh, USA
June 23, 200520 yr interesting experience. I have mine set at 64 for my 128 meg nvidia card. I'll try your setting when I get home and post the results...btw, with my current setting, I have no stutters and only an occasional pause, not worth worrying about...this with all sorts of complex sceneries and layers...sherm
June 23, 200520 yr The real reason is probably due to the PCI latency setting being much too high. Almost all cards are set way too high by default. Do a google for: LtcyCfg. It's a utility that allows you to alter and save PCI latency settings. Find the PCI latency entry for your card and change it to 64. It'll probably be way too high (my 9800Pro was set up at 255 out of the box!),Save the setting, and leave your AGP setting at 128 in the BIOS. You could eventually try 64 in the BIOS, but no lower. This will solve your problem, all other things being equal.Hope this helps.BestGrahame (EDHL)
June 23, 200520 yr good point, grahame, I had forgotten about the latency. I'm at work, but as I recall, mine is set for 32...fwiw, i don't have a clue what latency or any of the techie stuff means. I just read the advice here, try to apply it and if it works, fine...if not, that's OK too...:-)Sherm
June 23, 200520 yr AGP aperture settings simply makes little difference at all in games, because the graphics aren't heavy enough to require AGP texturing. AGP texturing would be useful mostly for professional graphics with massive textures. 64 or 128 are good setting, more is a waste.-
June 23, 200520 yr ShermI know altering the PCI latency made an ENORMOUS difference on my system. I upgraded to an AMD64 3500 Venice a couple of weeks ago, and even with my good old 9800Pro, FS rocks! Before I set the latency to 64, I was getting stutters when flying curves in the VC, or when panning around the aircraft in spot view. After adjusting the PCI latency (which I had forgotten to do when I re-installed after the system re-build), I'm running FS with nearly everything maxed out, and FPS set at unlimited. And NO stutters!Incidently: I had the chance to try an ATI X800XL with my new system, no noticable difference to the 9800Pro! So I've saved
June 24, 200520 yr IIRC Dick, setting the AGP apature to less than 32MB turns off the AGP acceleration.
