hi cannot log into Win XP

Featured Replies

cannot log on to XP I was trying to find a way to bypass the logon screen. I brought up the RUN dialog box and entered "control userpasswords2". In the User Accounts app, I unchecked the box that required a user name and password. Now when I try to restart, The logon box for Administrator comes up. When I click OK, I get the message "Unable to log you on because of a password restriction" comes up.Can someone please help me get back to where I can log on?

I had a similar situation recently after updating all the security updates from the MS update site. I booted to a blank welcome screen and I'm the only user of the PC.I eventually tried the repair function from the Windows XP Pro CD. (that way needs all the MS updates including SP2 etc to be reinstalled) and still couldn't gain entry. I ended up doing a format/reinstall.Shep

I'd try booting into Safe Mode and doing a system restore to a point prior to the password change. That should get you back to the old logon screen.Doug

What happened Clayton was probably the same thing that happened to me. When you unchecked the box, you were taken to a screen to confirm this. By checking OK you do the administrator thing with no password. What I finally did was type control userpasswords2. At this point you are at the screen that allows you to uncheck the username and password. The problem is that Windows defaults to the administrator in the 1st. line. If you click the second line which is your own login then uncheck the username and password box, all will be fine.JimCYWG
