Planning new system, comments welcome

Featured Replies

I am planning to buy a new system, main FS-relevant features being Athlon 4000, GeForce 6800GT, 1GB RAM (I have yet to decide on mobo).Given that I run AI and ActiveSky, will I finally get reasonable framerates (at least in the mid twenties)? What should I expect? Any suggestions? My current system is (don't laugh) a P4 2.4, GeForce Ti4200 and 512 MB RAM; FS brings it to its knees, like 2-3 FPS (perhaps even worse) in some situations. How much faster would the above-mentioned new system be compared to this one in FS?Thanks in advance.Nicolas in CYOW

yep thats going to be a good rig. I assume thats a Althon 64 4000? If your up in the air about a board I can suggest the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe or Premimum cause it will grow with you if you decide to go dual core and it runs like a champ and overclocks very well. It also has SLI if you decided to go that way and loves the dual channel ram.Its going to be night and day difference between your old and new systemPaul

Exchange that 6800 GT to a 7800 GS... Same price essentially the same or a little more performance. Draw less power and is a newer revision :). As for ATI it has been a while don

I recently built pretty close to what you're looking at, and except I did go with 2 gigs of ram. But anyway, it gets mid-20 frames all day in heavy weather, (ASV6). In fact my frame lock is now set to 30, although I've been experimenting with that setting...I agree with what was said about the video. I would go 7800GT over the 6800 at this point--prices are about the same.I will not laugh about your current system...'cause mine was a P4 1.8 with a GeForce 3 card. That was up until about a month ago.Rhett

Thanks to all of you for the comments and suggestions. It definitely helps. I'm still wondering about the 6800 vs the 7800; in Canada, there's still a +/- $200 difference. In Canada, the 6800GT here is $330 and the 7800GT is more than $500. And given that I've read elsewhere on the forums that there were some driver issues (affecting FS) with the 7800, I'm a bit reluctant to go with that card. And Rhett, are you running other add-ons apart from ASV (i.e. LDS767, PMDG products, etc.)?Thanks again,Nicolas in CYOW

Nicolas 7800 GS not 7800 GT :). 7800 GT is still nice but it

>And Rhett, are you running other add-ons apart from ASV (i.e. LDS767, >PMDG products, etc.)?>I just run ASV6. No PDMG stuff, etc. To my fresh FS9.1 install, I am slowly adding add-ons one at a time and evaluating them to determine their impact on the sim. For instance, I tried, but uninstalled "ActiveCamera" because I didn't like what it was doing.I run 100% AI slider and with ASV6 heavy weather and a busy airport, I still can't bog down this 3700+. The 4000+ you are looking at is the same cpu only 200 mhz faster, but for $100 extra US dollars, which as I said in another thread, is not as much value for the money. 3700+ is the price point right now for single-core cpu's (although they have been going up in price lately!) unless your price point is $400-800 for an FX series...but then imo you might as well go dual-core if you're spending that kind of money on a cpu.I really feel like the 6800 series is not what I would buy right now, unless I did plan to replace it in about a year, once we see how the DX10 and FSX situation pans out.And I bought an eVGA 7800GT card with a factory overclock, which suits me fine since I don't overclock vid cards myself anyway. I have only heard of the 7800GT and 7800GTX. I have never heard of a 7800GS, this must be something new. If the 7800GS is a value-edition of the 7800 series then it might be worth looking into in terms of bang-for-the-buck.Rhett

Thanks. Shopping for a new computer is such a maze with such an incredible array of options. Re: the CPU, the thing is that between the 3800 and the 4000, the difference is only $40, so I guess I'll go for the 4000. And I've read (on Extremetech I think) that the dualcores are actually slightly slower on FS (which is my main concern at this point).I'm still comparing vidcards. I've read elsewhere on the forums that there are some flickering issues with the 6800GT. I'm also looking at the X800 or X850 from ATI, and at the 7800 (any model) from nVidia. Right now, I've read so much stuff, I don't know what to think about any of the cards I've been considering. Thanks again,Nicolas in CYOW

It depends on how you use it. But in all cases they are more expensive hen single core CPU:s ;).X800/x850 is nice cards. 7800 GT is better and X1900XT is the best currently...Evga well that

I thought the 3700 only had 512kb cache compared to 1mb for the 4000+??Maybe I'm mistaken.........EDIT - I was mistaken!!

That's why the 3700+ is the most bang-for-the-buck. It's got the meg of L2 cache...all for 30% less than the 4000+Rhett

The Praetorian is like a cheap inferior in every way case to the Stacker ;).You can exchange the fan of course however PCP&C have changed the fan on their new 510 series... This one have a very thick 80 mm delta fan. The older one had a thinner variant with more blades... Both pretty silent when not spinning up but my old 510 span up like crazy and was very loud.
