Just went to MS to get newest DirectX end user runtime update released 4/06. Downloaded fine, then installed fine, maybe 25-30 MB, but after after 100% installed -> (paraphrase) "Error: Failed to install. Look in DxError.log or DirectX.log in Windows folder for explanation. I have no DxError.log or DirectX.log in Windows folder or anywhere else that I can find using "explore" or "search". I checked dxdiag, says everything is OK,Could someone who has downloaded this latest update take a look in your dxdiag, check version number and let me know what it says? Mine says Version 9.0c-(4.09.0000.0904). At least i will know if mine is outdated and hopefully how outdated. Also, If someone has experience dealing with Directx update problems, and has some insight into what's going on here, could you provide a suggestion to solve this, or direct me somewhere that might help, other than MS tech help. Thanks Hugo for replying.My files are also exactly the same as yours. But did you download and successfully install the DX update released 4/06/96? And if so, why doesn't it show up on your file list? I'm more confused now than before. Unless you haven't updated for a while, like me. Notice the most recent file dates on our lists is "quartz.dll: 6.05.2600.2749 English Final Retail 8/30/2005 05:54:26 1287168 bytes" and I think that corresponds well with the dates (8/?/05 as I recall) of the first DX files I downloaded today (download screen shows the type of update, there are many, and their release dates as they download). But, as I mentioned, they failed to install. After complete download and install, then "error" and "installation failed." I'm hoping someone will chime in who has succeeded in downloading and installing these DX updates. And knows the trick to get it done.Thanks folks.Rob

Do you have .NET 2.0? I think this may be a conflict issue with .NET 2.0 and DirectX.I have .NET 1.1 and did not upgrade to 2.0 becuase of incompatability issues with the newer version of .NET and DirectX.Scott:-cool

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, Scott, I do have NET 2.0. I vaguely recall getting it during one of my downloading binges (aka high speed internet addiction). For a brief moment when this all began, I wondered about a possible conflict between DX and NET 2.0, but must have tilted my head and the question promptly fell out of my head. I went on to try several other fixes: MS assistance several times in different ways, email, chat, tech support, calling... no luck there, time wasted. A friend suggested downloading the whole DX distributable package and installing the runtimes manually. I don't know. At this point, I want to know why DX EURTs download doesn't work and I want to figure out how to make it work. Excuse me, my geek is showing.Interestingly, ALL the DX EURT update files are in my computer in Windowssystem32directXwebsetup. They just don't install. I really think the DX/NET 2.0 conflict could be the answer. I'll dump NET 2.0 and see what happens. This has to be an issue for at least a few people out there, it can't just be me, can it? Remember, though, that the release of DX10 won't be available as a download. It's integrated into Vista and won't be available at all for winXP.Doug
