September 14, 200619 yr I just got an AMD64 4000+ and overclocked it by increasing the FSB from 200 to 215. So the 2.4gHz CPU is running at 2.58. Now I start wondering if this is the best or even correct way to OC my system? What about all the other variables taht I'm not even really familiar with? Or maybe by playing with those I could further optimize the overclocking. Thank you in advance for your input.Jason JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI

September 15, 200619 yr Any particular reason why you stopped at 215MHz bus speed? The general overclocking philosophy is to keep increasing bus speed in small increments until your system exhibits some form of stress (eg. self-reboots, freeze, failure under load), then back it off a little and test for stability. FYI, my 3000+ runs up to 275MHz bus speed, but I have to boost core voltage and cross my fingers to keep it there. I eventually settled on 261MHz for a 2.35GHz overclock at stock voltage, cool 'n quiet enabled, prime95 and FS9 certified and stable as a brick shhthouse all day long.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
September 15, 200619 yr Author Thanks Chuck for the links. I'll check them out.Hi Gary. I guess I'm a "casual o/cker", who tries to sneak in a bit of extra Hz and then stops. I've read here that some people o/c the 4000+ to 2.8. My goal was to 2.6 and of course that was achieved very easily...maybe I'll try something higher...at least try 220 FBS. September 15, 200619 yr ...and google for a programs called SuperPI and another called Prime95. They will test your overclock to see if it's stable.Of course FS9 is a pretty good stress-tester, imo. :) It'll take 100% cpu.RhettAMD 3700+, eVGA 7800GT 256, ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, etc. etc. Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
September 17, 200619 yr Let me ask you, what about the memory?I have a AMD 64 x4200 (2.2ghz) dual core. I can hardly bump up the speed before unstability. I'm guessing it's do to my memory timings being hard coded in the bios. I had to hard code it because it wasn't setting up the right timings automatically. (Too slow).Don't you have to losen your memory timings, and up the CPU voltage as you overclock your cpu?

You should (if you have a decent motherboard, ram) be able to overclock yours to 2.4 ghz or so, without touching memory settings. This will only give you a very small boost in FS, but it might be worth doing since it (should) be a rock solid overclock for you.I have not messed with a 4200+ (I don't know if those overclock well), but I would THINK that you could at least get 2.4 ghz out of it. I know the San Diego cores like I have, overclock pretty well.EDIT: Oh, I meant to mention that I overclock to 2.4 to 2.5, and I did not move mem timings at all to do this.RhettAMD 3700+, eVGA 7800GT 256, ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, etc. etc. Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
