Video card replacement for ATI Radeon 9800 Pro ?

Featured Replies

Hi,Here is my PC configuration, in brief :- Athlon XP 2600+- ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB- 2 x 512 Mo DDR PC2700 dual channelMy video card was good to run FS2004 but with FSX, all its memory is used. I'd like to buy a new video card with more RAM (256MB or 512MB) but I don't want to buy another CPU and motherboard for the moment. What do you think of the HIS Radeon

Damien.

I think it would be a waste of money to put that many upgrades into that MB. Sorry.I don't think any one can say for sure that card X is good for FSX. I don't think there is anything bad about the X1650Pro, but haven't seen any reports on running FSX on it so I am assuming it is OK. Unfortunately, finding good info on AGP cards is going to be hard, since most sites aren't that much interested in them. Many folks are claiming a 512mb card is better, though I'm not sure there is hard data for that. An alternative 256mb card would be the GF 7600GS. Without hard numbers I think it would be guess work for FSX performance.I think mix and match memory is not a good idea, but I can't say for sure that your idea wouldn't work, so take that with a grain of salt. Maybe soem one else has more experience with that.scott s..

My advice, FWIW Damien. If you do intend to do a major upgrade within 6 months don't spend all your money on your current rig. That 9800 Pro must still be a good card looking at its retail price and the price they are fetching on eBay.I would look for a 9800 Pro with 256MB if you can find one at a reasonable price. You already have 1GB RAM so the only step up would be 2x1GB, don't go for 1.5GB, I don't think you can do it with dual channel, you need 2 matched sticks of RAM.You have a slightly better system than I do so perhaps you are expecting too much.My frame rates in the default 737 are around 12 minimum except in the detailed airports where they can drop to 7 but that is usually around the airport buildings.I don't run AI traffic or autogen (I don't in FS9 either) but have water at 2xlow, road traffic at 50% and cruise and ferries at 30%AMD Athlon2500 @2.1FSB1GB RAM9800 Pro 128MB1280x1024 screen res.Good luck with your hunt :-), and lets us know how you got on.

I think my 9800 pro 128 is getting a little old...I was thinking about an x850 pro 256? Not too expensive and looks like about twice the performance, but shader 2.0. About $130 new. I just want to get another year out of my system. What do you guys think? You can compare them side by side at www.gpureview.com, but no benchmarks for the x850.
