UltimateDefrag settings for FSX?

Featured Replies

Can any of you bright folks provide suggestions for the DiskTrix UltimateDefrag configuration settings which will provide the best FSX performance? I

I found this a bit daunting to set up and always thought "did I do it right" - so I can't help u at all, sorryThe one I use now is PerfectDisk and found it quite sufficient for my needs.Happy New Year

Hi Robert,I just did my defrag setup last weekend (and yes, a bit daunting at first) and, after reading the defrag info, came up with this summary: whatever is at the front of the disk where there are more sectors per track can be read more quickly. The less the disk arm has to move in/out to seek the info the less lost time...That being said, I placed the Windows root folder files as high priority along with FSX folders - not the fsx root folder as such but the main sub folders. Here's my theory: my user AC is loaded just once; most dll's just once etc. What it has to constantly reload is scenery and textures so I placed Texture and Scenery folders first, then addon scenery, then simobjects, then my addon aircraft then everything else. I also selected 'place directories close..' option. I tried to originally place the pagefile out there it too, and though it seemed like it was trying to move it, apparently it didn't. It's still in the outer portion of the drive so I'll take whatever I can get.It seemed to improve load times slightly, improved the fps a bit and a definitely seems a little smoother. It's a bit subjective but I did save several test locations and did some before-and-after comparing. I forget the exact scenery/traffic levels (I think everything was center values except max scenery range/max texture size because I won't fly these at less than max ever). I got a bit more 24-28 fps than before and 12-13 at LAX instead of 9-10(I use Ultimate traffic and I think the traffictoolbox explorer indicated 124 flights being monitored). Now, out in my favorite canyons it's more like 38fps; I only go to major airports if I have to pick somebody up! I am using the portions of Ultimate Terrain that work. I disabled my 10m mesh first also.fsx.cfg info: fiber frame .30 / bandwidth mult 30 / trees max 5000 / buildings 1000My FSX 'came' from an E install cause I didn't have the space on C so I also had to empty D, and repartitioned 25G of that space (gave it to C) so I had room to migrate FSX onto C. I also did the same for my FS9 while I was at it, moving it to the front of drive 2.So far, so good and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Just take your time and it should go smoothly. Loyd

Hooked since FS4... now flying: FSX Acceleration on Win7/64, Core Duo E8400; GA-EP45-DS3R; GTX 460-768MB; 4G RAM; Freezer 7 Pro

If you do a Google search for FlightSim.Com opinion-editorial it will bring up Mikes Musings #2. This is a very good article on how to set up Ultimate defrag for FSX. I tried it and it makes a big difference in how FSX runs.Tom
