E6600 or E4300? That is the question?

Featured Replies

Hi,I'm considering a Core 2 Duo for a new FSX compatible rig and have narrowed it down to a e4300 or an e6600. It seems odd to be comparing these two processors but at 400 megahertz fsb, both chips should be running at 3.6 gigahertz!! I've been wondering if the increase L2 cache gives the e6600 a significant performance edge when both are overclocked to 3.6 (assuming you can get that high)? The price difference is ~125$ so it's very tempting to use the E4300.Thanks,

From reviews I have read on the web, the increased level 2 cache size makes about a 5-8% improvement in some applications and games. I have not seen any specific reports on the actual performance difference in FSX though, but it likely won't be any better. Whether that, and proven overclockability track record of the E6600, is worth an extra $125 to you is really up to you!Gary

I'd go with the 4300 if you're planning on overclocking...

Hi HP, I've been debating the same question for my new build. I definately plan on waiting for the price drops - expected mid April. I've also been looking at the new e6320 and 6420 chips to be released soon which will have the bigger 4mg cache. Guess I'll wait and see what prices are like and decide then. The newly announced chips utilizing the 45NM process are making me drool, but those won't be released to early 2008 at the earliest.BTW, welcome to Avsim.
