April 6, 200719 yr Hi, just updated from amd athlon 3000+ to athlon 4000+, what change should i look for in Fsx ( if any) . And what is all the hype about overclocking the chip.?. thanks.
April 6, 200719 yr About 3% increase in fps. 4-5% decrease in loading times. Overclocking is a waste of time with this chip, at least as far as FSX performance is concerned. Allcott
April 6, 200719 yr Which cores are you talking about (old and new)? You can find a chart towards the bottom of this page (third chart)...http://www.short-media.com/articles/amd_at..._4000_processor
April 6, 200719 yr Author Hi, Thanks for your reply, these are the spec's.My first post was in error,my old one was a athlon 3500. San Diego Athlon 64 3500/3700/4000+ E4 & E6 1 90 939 2200/2400MHz 1.35/1.4v 67/89w
April 6, 200719 yr OK, you went from a 2.2 ghz core to a 2.4 ghz core. It is single core. Your cache went from 512K to 1 meg, but this won't have much effect. You won't get much of an increase in performance. From 2.2 to 2.4 is about a 9% increase. You could try overclocking the 4000 if you have good cooling and know what you're doing. I have an Opteron up to 2.8 ghz with no problems (stock 2 ghz).If you got your 4000 up to 2.6 or 2.7, you would get a noticeable increase in FPS (if your other components aren't bottlenecking you). That's an 18 to 23% increase. With the 939 socket, this will be about as far as you can go. You could get a dual core Athlon 64...FSX RTM would use about 15-20% of the second core. FSX SP1 may use more of the second core. But that's about it. You'd have to go to the AM2 socket (or the forthcoming AM2+ socket) or to Core 2 Due for more performance.

The 3700+ and 4000+ and FX53/55/57 chip overclocks are quite effective in increasing FSX performance. Much much more than 3% increase in fps.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

April 8, 200719 yr Author Hi ,i think i have o.c. my chip by 8%, other than anything visual, how can i tell if it is working. thanks
April 9, 200719 yr >Hi ,i think i have o.c. my chip by 8%, other than anything>visual, how can i tell if it is working. thanksWith many BIOS's, your bootup screen will show the cpu speed you've got. Also programs like CPU-Z and nTune and Everest, etc. will show your cpu speed. In FS, with an A64 cpu like the original posters or mine, you should notice more framerate. It's pretty linear with our cpu's. CAn't speak for Core2's.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
April 9, 200719 yr Author Thanks for the info, now have ntune, seems like you can adjust everything at one time with the program, is this the way to go?. thanks
April 9, 200719 yr The nTune program I have does not allow adjustments.The way I do it is in the BIOS.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

April 10, 200719 yr What I meant was the AM2 Windsor cores go up to 3 ghz, while the 939 cores only get up to 2.6 ghz. So you can get some more clock speed. The bigger deal is that Agena and Kuma will drop into the AM2 socket when it comes out. With 939, you're at the end of the road.
April 13, 200719 yr Author Hi this is what ntune did for me on my amd 4000+, the only trouble is,after a short period the fsx locks up, the only way out is to shut down the comp. then i have trouble sterting back up. your comments please.
April 13, 200719 yr You attached your pic wrong, so I can't see what you did. It's no surprise that you are getting lockups running FS while overclocking.FS will push an overclock to the limits--if anything is going to test your overclock, FS will. Prime95 ain't got nuthin on FS.Without knowing what you did, it's hard to diagnose how to fix. Worst case, you may have to reset your CMOS jumper (depends on what motherboard you have) to factory defaults. That's especially true if you played around with memory timings...you can get a no boot situation, no BIOS access...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
