what is the definition of best framerate?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,As most post here discuss about the framerate performance when running FSX. I know this thing is higher the better. In fact, is there a highest framerate (or framerate limit) that our eyes can take? which mean any level higher than that bring no difference to our eyes?Anyone know about the visual display framerate of modern real flight simulator in the flight training center? Those big boxes.Alkit

People have their theories....30FPS is pretty good for me, if I were to get 30FPS,, everywhere with anything I flew, I'd be satisfied...lol though there's always more you can choke up a PC with HAHAHSome used to say 18FPS was the magic number, but I can easily tell between 18 and 30. I can tell between 30 and 60 too.... it just depends on what kinda flying you do...I currently run FSX in rural areas in the VC with around 20ish +/- , cities drop to around 15 which sucks...but oh well

See here:http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htmSince games don't yet have fullscreen motion blur, they generally will need more fps than movies to look smooth. But that's more the case in games than have a lot of rapid motions like shooters than FS. With FS, I generally think 20 is sufficient. I would say by 50 or so, you won't be able to notice any further improvments. With shooters than might be more like 70.But in the end, its really a matter of taste. Do extra graphics features do more for you or does smoothness?

That's an interesting reading. Thank you!My current pc can run FS9 in fps 60+ (mid high graphic setting, no addon), 30+ (with some addon); FSX fps 19 (low end setting, no addon), frozen (mid end setting). My own feeling is:<10 (very difficult to fly and land), 19 is satisfy, 30 is good, 60 is wonderful, >60 (didnt try in FS9 before, but dun think the improvement is meaningful in FS)Wish my new pc can reach the range of 30 with mid-high setting and some addons.Alkit

Generally, an average framerate of 60 FPS is considered good. This means that it might dip to about 30 FPS when there's intense action and go as high as 90 when there isn't a lot happening.Unfortunately, because of the way the FS graphics engine works, few users expereience this level of performance. In fact, when a new FS is released, hardware rarely exists that can run the sim above 15 FPS at full details.

Just to throw another potato into the FPS stew-.Does FPS relate to the number of images generated per second? If there are NO changes to the image, should not the FPS then approach infinity? (at least mathematically!).Or alternatively, does FPS reflect the rate of updating of the mathematics of the sim model? -and hence FPS is not necessarily nor directly related to quality of image? .In a triple monitor (triple video cards) setup, is the DISPLAYED FPS perhaps 1/3 of the actual FPS?(In my triple view setup, frame rates can go as low as 5 (night/major airport & Ultimate Terrain lights or daytime heavy nearby cloud) and yet the airplane continues to behave smoothly & is quite flyable. Conversely, I can't see any difference between a very smooth 15FPS on 3 monitors and 35-45 on a single monitor. (same setup- just different number of monitors assigned to the Desktop.) Anybody REALLY know what FPS represents?Alex Reid

for your first questionhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_ratefor your 3 monitor setup, are they getting the output from 3 individual video cards? are they the same model of video card, or the other two secondary cards are less powerful? I expect a drop in performance, but not that much of drop from 35-45 to 15.

Alkit- Yes , the three monitors are driven by 3 GeforceFX5200 cards- a dual head AGP and a single PCI. (Processor is AMD XP2200 1.8GHz with 1.28GB RAM). My observations tell me the performance is the SAME, whether triple view monitors @ 15fps or single @ 45fps !! I can't detect any quality difference- so I suspect that the triple monitor rate is derived simply by mathematically dividing the base rate by 3 !That would explain why the sim is quite flyable at DISPLAYED FPS as low as 5. Generally, I simply turn off the FPS display and fly happily with a 180

FPS isnt alway that important. for instance in fs9 if the frame rate dropped below 15 FPS you got quiet a slide show, in FSX ive seeing it drop to 7 and still run smooth. I think this has more to do with getting textures to screen quicker now with the new hardware then anything else but I just leave the FPS thing off now and everything is lovely.
