October 30, 200718 yr Flight Simulator X won't run on new computer.Windows Vista UltimateCore2 Extreme QX6700 F-OC' Quad Core, 4GB Corsair Dominator OC' 1066MHz, Dual 768MB Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX, Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Extreme, 2 Samsung 21"ers and a 24" Wide.It ran fine on the old Pentium 4, Pentium D, and Quad core Q6600, Dual NVIDIA 8600 GTS running Windows XP, but won't run at all on a Vista.I installed KB#933590 (for Vista and multiple monitors) "at least the software will start now".This Microsoft product will still not run on this Microsoft operating system at all, even at the "lowest resolution" and all "minima"l graphical settings, one monitor and full SLI.Even on the old Pentium 4 it ran fine on ultrahigh settings.Installed and reinstalled many times, started with a brand-new computer fresh with no other software, installed service pack one, no third-party software, all other programs work fine on the new computer. After waiting a week for Microsoft technicians to call back, all they did was fiddle with some AA settings, quality sliders, and tried taking jets off from different airport gates. Then they gave up!(What a shameful waste of time that was)Does anyone have any ideas? (This is a great product and we are looking forward to getting it working again).
October 30, 200718 yr What do you mean it wont run?Wont start, low fps, crashes, etc?Post your settings for FSX and the 8800, and more detail about what is the problem. October 30, 200718 yr Thank you for your help,The software will not run.(Very poor jerky picture)(fatal errors)(your computer has run out of available memory)(blue screen of death)etc.the program worked fine on all of the other computers.Yes, all the windows updates have been applied, yes, all hardware drivers have been updated,The settings are as stated above:"at least the software will (start) now""lowest resolution" (1024x768x16)"all minimal settings""one monitor full SLI"all ideas welcome!
October 30, 200718 yr Hi,Blue screens indicate that your system isn't stable. FSX is the perfect tool to detect an unstable system.Have you OCed your CPU and/or GPU? If you OC you often have to loosen up the memory settings in BIOS to ensure the stability.Try to run a memory stress test utility to ensure that your memory doesn't fail. It might be that you have a faulty memory stick.Have you searched your mobo manufactures support forum? If your mobo is brand new on the market, you might need to update BIOS.If you bought your pc of the shelf, you might get help to detect any hardware failures from your supplier.Ulf B :-)
October 30, 200718 yr Thank you for your suggestions, This is a brand-new Dell XPS 720, Red,factory overclocked processor, factory overclocked memory.Quote from above:"Core2 Extreme QX6700 F-OC' Quad Core, 4GB Corsair Dominator F-OC' 1066MHz," One might think that the "Dual 768MB Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX," should have enough memory on their own to match the performance of a Pentium 4 with 512 memory and onboard video. The system works fine with everything else, flight simulator 2004, World in Conflict, BioShock, Crysis, (all at maximum resolution and quality). I also get incredible results running Dragon voice recognition system 9, Boinc, Bryce5, Photoshop, other 3-D computer graphics software, music and video authoring software.
October 30, 200718 yr This sounds like a memory problem. Your other programs are not nearly so memory intensive as FSX.Are you running Vista 32bit?? If you are with those 2x768MB cards in they are already grabbing 1.5GB of adddress space, your operating system is grabbing 0.5GB so you only have 2GB of usable address space to assign to RAM any way...or is your Vista 64-bit???If it's 32-bit try taking out 2 sticks (I assume it has 4x1GB)and running FSX on just 2GB memoryRegardsJimMy system specs:MB: EVGA 680iCPU: X6800RAM: 2GB OCZ 1066MHzGPUs: 2 x 8800GTXDual Boot XP Pro & Vista Business
October 31, 200718 yr Thank you!Running 32bit Vista, and I already took out 2 1GB sticks (No Noticeable difference)
October 31, 200718 yr >>Does anyone have any ideas? Yes, but they are wild and crazy ideas. :)Ok for starters, I would simplify the config for testing:-- Turn off SLI. And physically REMOVE one of the 8800GTX's.-- Remove ALL monitors but one of the 21"'ers.-- Only run 2gb of ram.-- Turn down ALL, and I mean all overclocking. That's the starting point I would use.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
October 31, 200718 yr I have dual GTX's wit ha new Dell Quad Core and got the Blue Screen fatal error when I set up the dual monitors wrong. I needed to turn SLI off and I didn't - it really messed up big time. Are you running 1 or 2 monitors. A system restore didn't work, I had to reinstall Vista - a major pain. Now I get kick a@@ performance. Paul Gugliotta
October 31, 200718 yr There are lots of good ideas here, thank you all! (But) I have tried them all.I removed the video cards and switched slots and also tried them each a solo.I also tried other monitors, 17 inch, 19 inch, 21 wide. And,I know about turning SLI off to run multiple monitors, multiple monitors ran just fine on the other computers, but I am testing/troubleshooting at the simplest possible configuration. (One small 17" monitor 4:3 aspect ratio, lowest resolution and minimal settings).
October 31, 200718 yr Installed and reinstalled many times, started with a brand-new computer fresh with no other software, installed service pack one, no third-party software, all other programs work fine on the new computer.Doe this mean you started with a formatted disk or did you restore the DELL setup? Personally I would reset the BIOS, format the Hard-Drive and do a clean install using an OEM or Retail version of your OS (you can still use your existing Licence number). You'll be able to get all your drivers from the DELL support site using your Service Tag...however what you might not be able to get is any bundled software that came with it.RegardsJim
