November 15, 200718 yr Is there a difference in performance between the hat mount and the headset mount clips?I have the hat clip and use it in a fairly dark environment. Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
November 16, 200718 yr I have both and both work equally well. AMD 3800X, Gigabyte Radeon 5700XT, AS Rock X570 Phantom Gaming 4, 32mb 3600 ram
November 16, 200718 yr Get the headset if you have a light source that might confuse the TrackIR sensor. Otherwise the clip works fine.Cheers,Noel. 11th Gen i9-11900K @ 3.5GHz | nVidia GeForce RTX 3080 | Corsair 64 GB RAM | Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB | Asus 27" RoG G-Sync Track IR5 | Thrustmaster Warthog | CH Products Pedals
November 16, 200718 yr I have both but I much prefer the headset mount.1) The hat clip tends to fall off2) The hat gives you a bad hair day3) The hat provides never ending remarks of how you look like a geek from your spousehttp://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpgForum Moderatorhttp://geofageofa.spaces.live.com/ Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
November 16, 200718 yr "The hat provides never ending remarks of how you look like a geek from your spouse""Geek" I can take. It was the "dork" comment from my girlfriend that caused me to get the upgraded Pro version. Now she says I look more like Tom Cruise in Top Gun than some guy who just fell off his combine.
November 16, 200718 yr The first thing I did with the clip was nearly knock myself out, I have cordless headphones and suddenly I'm now attached to the PC, so naturally I went to get up and.... "WHACK!! OW", my cord pulled my headphones back.Haven't done it since though. I guess a little pain is a good teacher... The only thing I was disappointed over was that it made no difference in sunlight, I still have trouble picking up properly when the sun is out since it's behind me. Otherwise I do find it smoother for some reason.
November 16, 200718 yr I've found either one is equally confused by the sun from the window or the incandescent bulbs in the ceiling fixture behind me. I can have a desk light on as long as the TrackIR doesn't "see" the bulb. I solved the window problem with a room darkening window shade.BTW, my spouse thinks I look like a "dork" in either the hat or the headset. They just don't understand simming. November 16, 200718 yr Just to clarify for everyone:Neither the hat mount, nor the ProClip version has anything to do with the inability of the unit to function well in a back-lit environment. If there is a window behind you, and the sun is shining, this confuses the infrared scanner that is mounted on your monitor. All it does is attempt to find the 3 dots on your head; and a backlit situation with a large light source confuses the scanner, so that it can't find the 3 dots.Although you can change the light sensitivity of the sensing unit, I've found that a sunny day and a window behind my head just can't be overcome.I did find, however, that the ProClip version is smoother (at least it was for me), and the sensor is able to track it better.Bottom line: If you don't own a TrackIR, you're missing a large immersion improvement. If they could get the price down to say $99 bucks ... I think they'd sell a ton of them.

November 16, 200718 yr Author This is a dupe to a new post.OK,I just ordered my TrackIR Pro clip and am getting rid of the hat.Now I need a headset because the cheapie I have been using I don't think will work with the clip.I have 2 external speakers and a subwoofer. Now I plug my headset into the speakers. Is there an advatage to USB headset or can I just get a regular one like I have now that the clip will mount to?If I go USB will it negate my exteral speakers? Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
November 17, 200718 yr Hi,If I mount the track IR on my blue cap, I'll get about 2-3 fps more than if I mount it on my white cap. I also made some comparison tests changing the temperature in the room where I keep my pc. If I increase the temperature, I get about 4-5 more fps per degree celsius. I also tested to attach some magic crystals on my windows, and all stutters vanished. To my dissapointment I noticed a decrease of fps If I activated my magic magnetic balls. I tested to change my keyboard cable from a standard cable to a gold cable, and I got crisp clear textures all over FSX.Now I consider to change my mouse ball from standard rubber ball to magic crystal. Any comments on how this might affect DX10 preview?Ulf B :-jumpy
November 17, 200718 yr As I noted in the other thread, the advantage of a USB headset is that it is a sound device all on its own. This means that you can assign the headset to make the "Voice" sounds, and the rest of the sounds go to your speakers. This can be a big help in Multiplayer or VOX-ATC. But if you're trying to keep it quiet for the wife, well, then that negates that advantage.Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)N15802 KASH '73 Piper Cherokee Challenger 180 Tom Perry
