December 3, 200718 yr I am running Vista Home Premium 64 on a separate drive. For the most part, I like it, specially for the fact that it does recognize all of the 4 Gigs of ram I have. I did change the look of it as close as can be to XP pro.The thing that irks me most is SECURITY. Even logged in as ADMINISTRATOR, there are some tasks that are either DENIED completely, or have to be modified somewhat. I did disable UAC for whatever it's worth, but it does not seem to cover everything.Does anybody have any tricks up their sleeve that would make VISTA TAMER?Appreciate any help.Thanks.Abe
December 3, 200718 yr I've come across a couple of Vista areas myself where the security is just too tight for what I want to do, even with UAC disabled. Take for example trying to copy replacement textures into FS9's texture directory. Vista won't let me overwrite files there because they are read-only for some reason, but even when I change the directory to read-write, it still shows up as read-only, thus not allowing me to make these desired changes. How do we overcome such obstacles?Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
December 3, 200718 yr GaryWhat works for me is to open the program you are using to modify a file( notepad or DXTBmp,etc.)browse to the file, do your work ,then save. Rather than the other way around. I think you can also copy files into a folder as a different name, delete or backup the original , then rename the new files as the originals.I like the security but it does take some getting used to.Bob Bob i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.
December 3, 200718 yr Never install anything into a folder that starts with the word Program...;) When you install FSX, use X:FSX where X is the drive you wish to use and keep it and all of your other addons out of the Program Files directory and all of its variants, eg ProgramData, Program Files(x86) etc.Regards,Jim Karn
December 3, 200718 yr You could avoid the problem by installing everthing in folders that are outside of the programfiles folders. Or what I do is create 4 new folders in program files.Programfiles/GamesProgramfiles(x86)/GamesProgramfiles/AppsProgramfiles(x86)/AppsThen I take ownership of those folders in the security tab of each folder. After that I grant full control permission in the permissions tab of those folders. For the games folders I disable disk indexing.I uncheck the read only checkbox in each folders file properties. For some reason the box will still appear checked afterwards, but you will have full control of the folder's files if you have propery taken ownership and given yourself the permissions.
December 4, 200718 yr Thanks for the tips guys - I'll be trying some of these out :-)Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
