October 15, 200817 yr Is this card:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130370Better than the original 8800GTX?The 8800GTX only has a 384bit memory interface and this new 260 has a 448 I think. Is this a good card for FSX? What about for other games, like shooters etc? | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
October 16, 200817 yr Been thinking about getting this card as well. I'm going from the 8800GTX. I've also been looking at the 4870 1Gb but not too sure about the 256bit interface. Hope someone knows a bit more about this.
October 16, 200817 yr Generally a GTX280 is slower than the 8800 and 9800 series in Flight Simulator X.http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia...80,1953-15.htmlIn other games with modern 3D engines, the GTX260 and GTX280 blow the 8800/9800's away. Also memory interface bus width means nothing - ATI was using a full 512-bit wide bus for their 2900XT but have since switched to 256-bit - yet both the 4850 and 4870 outperform the old 2900XT by far.If your system is only an FS rig, you'd be better off switching to an Intel mobo and a fast Quad core processor while keeping the videocard, as FSX is 100% CPU bound and the Athlon X2 6000+ is really long in the tooth. -
October 16, 200817 yr Author I was just wondering, not planning on an upgrade any time soon. I like to stay in the latest n greatest hardware loop though (which is hard lol) | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

They have been updated since then and I am sure every update will realize more speed each time. My 8800GTX was slow to start with as well but it is much faster now with the updates. October 20, 200817 yr Looks like the cards have picked up about 6% worth of FPS:http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/GeForc...ng,2037-13.htmlAs of September 26th, that was not enough to change the picture:http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/GeForc...ck,2028-18.htmlCan't really blame Nvidia for that, especially since ATI has the same problem. Any optimizations done to improve the performance of modern DX9 and DX10 games are bound to have the oposite effect on FS, given its ancient engine which is really just a DX7 engine with pixel shaders added as an afterthought. -
October 25, 200817 yr >FSX is 100% CPU bound This has been said for years, but SURELY upgrading the video card should yield some improvement in FSX FPS...Because if not so, the FSX coding is some of the worst ever for not properly offloading to the GPU!
