9800GTX+ for FSX

Featured Replies

Would somebody out there kindly tell me would a 9800GTX+ cut it with FSX?I am comparing price versus performance.Cheers all

Yes that card will be fine....IF...you have a good CPU...mem....big hard drive. That card will not be your problem with runnibg FSX. Regards

i have one of these in the computer i just bought and it works very well. i am using it with a Q9550 O/C to 3.4 Ghz and 4 gig of 800 Mhz ram but i have no stutters on very high settings.

Thanks for your info. You say you are running Q9550 oc to 3.4 Ghz. I was considering E8500 OC to 3.4 Ghz. Do you think I would get the same result as you?Would it make much difference if i went to 1066mhz ram DDR as opposed to 800 Mhz? (What CL is your ram?)Thanks

if they are both going to be 3.4 GHZ CPU, then go for the quad, core 3 and 4 help with texture loading so you get less blurries, i have none of that for the most part, maybe in LAX or JFK, it takes an extra second to load but frame rates are still very good. the E8500 will only give you the 2 cores and they will probably both be at 100%. my 3 and 4 cores are almost 100% so the extra two help out.yes the faster RAM will help out as well but i dont know if you will see a huge difference with it. i have the corsair OCZ ram now, i was going to go with the dominator but 2 gig of that was the same $$ as 4 of the OCZ.

The screen res you are using is a very important consideration. For 1680x1050 the 9800GTX (+ or not) will be just fine. Higher resolutions will be better off with a Radeon 4870 or the GTX260. If you are on a 22inch or less monitor now consider if you will not be upgrading to a 24 or 26 inch in the near to medium term?Hope this helps!

i using it with a matrox TH2Go and so my screen resolution is 3072X 768 (I am using 3 15" monitors) and still not a issue at all. i want to go with 3 19" screens next, once the financial situation improves some.

I upgraded from an 8600GT to a 9800GTX+, performance doubled on FSX and went up 75% on FS2004 (it was already good). E6750, 2GB RAM.Shez

I just ordered a 9800GTX+ as an upgrade to my 8800 GTS (320MB), as it seemed that the 320 MB of video ram was just not sufficient for FSX. But I've been very impressed with the image quality produced by the 8800 GTS using the nHancer settings recommended by Nick N in other posts. I hope that I will see the same image quality with the 9800GTX+!For those using this card, what drivers and driver settings seem to be optimal? Are you using nHancer with this card, and if so, do the nHancer settings that work so well with the 8800 cards also recommended for the 9800 cards? Thanks for any tips--Rich

Been running the 9800GTX (non +) since it was released and am very happy with it. I do not use nHancer (just too much of a mission to set it all up, but that is just my opinion) - all I do is set Forceware Control Panel "Single display performance mode" on the Global Settings tab and then set up AA and AF as desired under the Program Settings tab for MS Flight Simulator X.My 9800GTX runs perfectly stable at 720/1100/1800 for the GPU/Memory/Shader (default is 675/1100/1688). The 9800GTX+ has slightly higher default clocks and should be able to OC a bit better without much fanfare. I only ever use RivaTuner to OC the GPU.In terms of drivers I pretty much always install the latest beta's a day or two after release and after checking out the forums on guru3d.com. Am currently running 180.43's without any problems whatsoever.Hope this helps.Konrad

Latest drivers the 180s in use. Visual quality from my 8600GT is definitely far far improved. Especially noticeable are ground textures and the autogen textures.I use Riva Tuner and set up profiles which auto-launch FS2004 and FSX. For both the launcher setup for me changes defaults to AAx8S, AFx16. I have no need to overclock the card as of yet as it so far ahead of what I need. Maybe in FS11 :)I don't use nHancer as it does not give me control over screen brightness.Shez

I'm currently running 2, 40"ers at 19x10 with the 9800GTX+. FSX runs on one in window'd mode and the other has a CDU, PDF charts, webpages, etc. O/C'd to 800/2000/1200. 3Dmark runs keep temp right at 70C. FSX runs it in the mid 60Cs. At idle, it's silent or at least below my ambient noise floor. It'll run at 820, but throws some artifacts. Also running FEX clouds at 4096 res and haven't noticed any problems with frames. Sunset views on the big screen with those clouds are simply stunning. The card seems plenty for FS.

Thanks for the replies about drivers and nHancer. I was in the habit of using nHancer with my 8800 GTS, as we went thru a period with the nVidia drivers when the drivers would try to force certain settings that were not the greatest, and nHancer let me override those settings and set up a profile that gave excellent results. I've had great clarity and detail with all the textures, and I have not had any of the shimmering that used to plague FS. Nick's settings were right on the money, at least for the 8800 cards. Perhaps nVidia has at last gotten it right with their control panel; we'll see!The new card should arrive tomorrow. Based on the input here, I believe I will be pleased.Rich
