"Corrupt" Beta Download

Featured Replies

The fileplanet site says that the Windows built in unzip utility will frequently report a good file as corrupt. It recommends using WinZip 9 or WinZip 10 to unzip the file.Be sure to try WinZip before trashing the file and starting over.

Yeah I read that. I tried opening it with winzip 10 first, and it said it was corrupt. I tried winrar next, same result. Oh well, it happens, and it's 3.5 more hours that my wife gets to see me before I plunge into the beta.I noticed a checkbox in the download manager options that says "do not unzip files with the .zip extension" that is off by default. I checked it this time and we'll see if that helps.

Same here. I've started the four separates now, which I really should have done in the first place, plus my bandwidth is now being used to the full.

I've had access to the beta for 3 days now and have yet to get a good download. The "big" version always gets hung up "finalizing" in the FP DLM, and curiously the size of the .part file is always only around 4 GB.I've done the "four separates" but there are 3 files in the third part that always fail their CRC check.I'm uzing WinZip 10 with a recently reformatted and defragged hard drive, that has over 30GB of free space.I've uninstalled the FP download manager and am downloading the "part 3" file straight through Firefox now. If I get errors on the same 3 files I'm going to try this method with the 8GB full version. I've also disabled my MacAfee antivirus and firewall this time (probably should have done that first but they've never given me any problems with FP downloads or their download manager).

None of that stuff worked. I reinstalled the download manager and no fix.I'm trying from a different PC now. If this doesn't work, someone's going to find themselves lucky enough to have my beta key.:-violin

I'll trade you ;)

I'll take another day or so to try different things. No more PMs please.

Jeremy, after my initial full 8Gb corrupt download I tried the separates and they worked fine. If you are downloading from the same server each time maybe you should try a different one in the list (heck, it's worth even trying them all ;) ), once downloaded the built-in 'compressed folders' feature of windows opened the files no problem. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I tried 2 East Coast, one Midwest, and one West Coast server. I kept getting CRC errors on the exact same 3 .cab files.I did delete the zip file every time and cleared my cache, but I must have missed something. The only thing I can think of is that Windows is on a 15GB partition that only has about 3GB free. I keep everything on a 120GB partition (that's the one that has 30GB free). I have my FP downloads set to go to that partition, and when I tried without the FP manager, I told Firefox to "save as" to that partition. One thing I noticed is the fileplanet ".dlmpartial" file for the full client download would never get bigger than 4 gigs.Anyway, I'm trying it on my wife's computer now. The .dlmpartial file is 8.6GB right out of the gate, so that's a good thing. When/if it finishes (it keeps pausing/stalling and I have to cycle the "pause" button in the DLM manager to get it to resume), I'm going to unzip it over there and then transfer it over the network to this computer.I'm so glad I'm building myself a new computer next year for FSX. At 4 years old I couldn't be happier with how long I was able to stretch this one (only till GRAW came out did I find a game I could not run even on its lowest settings), but it's time to move on.About the key, I've decided since it's tied to my FP account, I'm not giving it away. Not sure if there's any risk for me giving it away, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. Sorry for getting people's hopes up.

Ok.I paid my $7.90. Downloaded 3 seperate fiels from 3 sites (2 West Coast and 1 East Coast). So, what would be my next step to get the BETA?Tim

Should be either 4 files or 1 file. If you got your key, all the instructions should be in the email you got from Fileplanet.

This is of course assuming you were even assigned a key. If you didn't get one, then you'll probably only have access to the time limited beta that I've seen mentioned on the forums. It's not a paid beta, i.e. paying for a fileplanet subscription doesn't necessarily give you a key. There's been a lot of confusion about this among the FS community. People seem to think it's a beta that you pay for, but it's really just a (while supplies last) perk of joining fileplanet's subscription service. They've been offering limited beta access (as well as free full versions of games and other things) as an incentive for subscribing to their download service for years. Unfortunately a lot of people in the FS community don't play other games and don't get how this works. It's like going to a baseball game on "free hat day", but there are a limited number of hats. Several members of the FS community have been "buying a game ticket just for the hat", and then crying foul when the "hats" have run out, demanding their money back, saying it's bait and switch and other such nonsense. If you didn't yourself get a key, hopefully you were able to see the disclaimers on the fileplanet site about subscribing not guaranteeing a beta key before you paid. There have been a lot of misleading links and posts presented as a result of people jumping to conclusions and/or not being familiar with how the system works. As for myself, I should know if I've finally beaten my download gremlins by tomorrow. I was able to sucessfully download the full 8.6 GB file onto my wife's computer, and then unzip it to mine. The installer's running now.

Success! It download fully onto my wife's computer and unzipped onto mine over my network. Either my multiple partitions or my FAT32 screwed things up is my guess, but it's working now. I'll be keeping my key, thank you. ;)
