May 7, 200917 yr RUNNING fs9 ..my system is used exclusively for fs9 ..i do nothing else with it..if i DONT check the box that says empty cache will help in slightly more FPSand preformance ..or does it just take up harddrive space and do nothing ..????
May 7, 200917 yr Caching in FS merely speeds up RE-loading if you have to quit the sim to adjust settings or go to an outside app. It should have no bearing on FS performance in-game, only in how quickly FS can reload after being shut down.
May 7, 200917 yr ok...so its not a bad idea to empty it?is that correct. Caching in FS merely speeds up RE-loading if you have to quit the sim to adjust settings or go to an outside app. It should have no bearing on FS performance in-game, only in how quickly FS can reload after being shut down.
May 8, 200917 yr Unless you are referring to some other "cache" option, the only one I am aware of is in the Scenery Library dialogue. It refers to a cache of CD-ROM scenery.I was told years ago that that should only be checked if you did not do a "complete" install but elected to do a partial install keeping some of the files on the CD.If that be true, and you have a "complete" installation, enabling it should have no bearing at all.If I am wrong on this I am sure someone will step in and correct me. :(
May 8, 200917 yr yes sir you got that right..however i did a full install and the box is currently unchecked (CD-ROM SCENERY) ...based on what you said here i am ok checking it ... May 8, 200917 yr yes sir you got that right..however i did a full install and the box is currently unchecked (CD-ROM SCENERY) ...based on what you said here i am ok checking it ...I have run my system for several years with it UNchecked - which as I said earlier was what I was advised to do.I have tried it both ways over the years and have seen no difference whatsoever in loading times or any other measure.
May 8, 200917 yr then i will leave it in default which IS unchecked ..thank u david...and thanks to the other posts also I have run my system for several years with it UNchecked - which as I said earlier was what I was advised to do.I have tried it both ways over the years and have seen no difference whatsoever in loading times or any other measure.

In such a case, files read from the CD-ROM will be cached for quicker access than having to re-read them from the CDROM (which obviously has slower read times than your HD), and can remain in the cache after you shut down FS9 for use next time and quick access without having to read them again from the CD-ROM. In the case of a full install of FS9 to your harddrive, the "cache" option does absolutely nothing whether it is checked or unchecked.

May 8, 200917 yr i think it's from the old days, when scenery areas were purchased separately and loaded from floppy disk:and hard disk space was expensive. I note that if you install scenery on a network drive, by default it will be cached to hard drive. The check box really has no bearing now on or off.scott s..
