Hi, I run 2 EVGA 9800GTX 512mb in SLI mode. I know SLI does not help FSX. If I got one of the newer 2gb cards would that help FSX frame rates? I have a Q9550 cpu now. 8gb of ramGreg
One of the newer cards may improve frame rates some, but not because it has 2GB of VRAM on it. The only difference you're likely to see with the additional VRAM above 1GB is faster texture loads when switching views or rapidly panning around, especially if you are running with a very large high-res monitor(s). That said, I doubt a Q9550 is going to be able to push a faster video card much past what you're seeing with the 9800GTX unless you're overclocking it a good bit past its 2.83 GHz stock clock speed.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

I have set the overclock to 3.1. Is it worth getting a 1gb card and dumping the 2 SLI 9800's?
I think you might see some marginal improvement, but I'd expect the bang for the buck to be on the underwhelming side. One thing you can try is to over or underclock the 9800s and see what difference that makes in frame rates. If pushing up the GPU clocks doesn't improve frame rates, then the CPU (or memory, or something else) is a limiting factor...putting a faster GPU in won't enable the CPU to push more triangles to it. Likewise, if a modest decrease in GPU speed doesn't produce a change in frame rates downward, then the CPU or other subsystem is already bottlenecked somewhere below the GPU speed you're operating with now, and a faster GPU isn't going to help.I don't know what effect having the two 9800s in SLI has on performance...it's well known that FSX won't take advantage of SLI capability, but what I don't know is if the overhead of the SLI config has a detrimental effect, or how much. My thoughts are based on the assumption that the two cards perform in FSX about like a single card would. That quad at 3.1 GHz and a single 9800GTX are in the ballpark for a reasonably even match between CPU and GPU in FSX. If anything, I'd expect that the GPU is already outrunning the CPU at that speed. I run an X6800 Core 2 Extreme at 3.6 GHz and an 8800GTX, and pushing up the GPU does nothing for frames in FSX. To significantly increase performance, you need to increase both together so that increased CPU throughput keeps the GPU's pipeline full without overrunning it.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

The Q9550 will go much higher than 3.1 if you have an after market cooler and decent ram. I have mine at 4.05 with ease, very stable, and have had no problems. I have a 1gb gtx280. That is all you need for FSX. You will not notice any difference with more video ram unless you have an extremely high resolution monitor.Bill
