MD-11 questions (from a noob)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I wasn't able to retrieve answers to the following questions from the manuals, as such i decided to ask them here in hope you will not crucify me.1) when i take off and engage profile and FMS speed, the plane climbs in an insane rate of ~5000-6000 ft. is that normal ??2) in the tutorial for temp/wind you told us to enter -56/TL022.... what does it mean ?thanks in advance,Paul Glinston

Initial climb rates when you are light are that high... that's no higher than most bizjets (not include VLJs). They are not flown light often, and when done the flex adjustments are made to reduce thrust and save wear. The numbers are temp/wind as in -56C at a 22 kt tailwind.

-56c are cruise temp ?isnt the freezing temp for fuel is -40c ?Also, when i prepare the a/c for landing, i press that yellow knob on the yoke, but the speed is still being controlled by the autopilot, how do i disengage it ?thanks

The disconnect button on the yoke only takes care of the autopilot, leaving the autothrottles still engaged. To go manual with the throttles, hit CTRL+Z. You'll see the disconnect warning flash red on the PFD until you confirm it by hitting CTRL+Z a second time, then it'll go yellow if I remember right.

Thanks, but how can i disengage the a/t without hitting the keyboard bottons ? do i click on the AFS knobs on the MCP ?

-56 is the SAT, the fuel wouldn't freeze until the TAT reaches -40. The TAT this time of year will be in the -20's. TAT is the temperature of the air immediately around the plane as a result of friction. In any event, the fuel is heated using engine oil, so you'd have to be on a long flight with cold temps for it to freeze. I'm still yet to see my fuel get that cold.Paul

There are two disconnect buttons for the ATS - look on the left side of the #1 thrust lever, and the right side of the #3 thrust lever. Click either one and that'll take care of it. Just imagine as if your hand was on the throttles - you'd be clicking it with your thumb or pinky.

May i just ask what are the AFS override knobs on the MCP for ?Also if im using thr S/C feature...lets say i set 350/380do i set the ALT on the mCP to the first one and wait till the S/C point and then set the alt. to the second one or do i set the MCP ALT to the second ALT Thank you so much for your kind and helpful assistance.

The OVRD switches are used to disconnect the AP/AT systems in case the normal disconnect switches somehow fail.

As far as my understanding is, set the FMS up with 350/380. You will want to set the MCP ALT to the first altitude in sequence - 350. After you climb to FL350, wait for your Step Climb point, then set your MCP to the next altitude and climb.

Another question sir...If i cruise at a FL350 but i want to jump to FL370.how do i program that within the FMC ?

Dial FL370 into the MCP and pull the wheel or use V/S climb mode. The altitude target indication in the top right corner of the PFD will become white.Reenter your S/C profile into the FMS and execute. The indication will return to magenta colour, meaning you are within the profile calculated by the FMS.Regarding the step climb:As soon as you reach your initial cruising altitude e.g. FL350 you can dial the next step climb into the MCP long before reaching the actual S/C waypoint. However the normal procedure would be to wait until you get near the waypoint.
