Frame Rates?

Featured Replies

Its acctually bad to have your frames on Unlimited, because you are telling flight sim that is doesnt matter what you get. From 1-100. Unlimited means "No limit" there for, yes, there is no limit to how HIGH it can go, but nor is there for how LOW it can go...I sigjust you lock somwhere around 30, after all, anything higer and you couldnt tell anyway. Humans can only see 30 FPS.
lol, what a wealth of mis-information that is. First, please point me to the scientific study proving my eyes and brain are unable to "see" above 30fps. Does the real world happen at 30fps? In actuality, there is all kinds of evidence (including what my own eyes tell me) that we humans are capable of seeing much higher framerates. Fighter pilots have been shown to see a single frame image in a series shown at 200fps. Secondly, as far as the framerate lock in FS, what it does is tell flightsim not to go above a certain point set by the user. It has nothing whatsoever to do with "how low it can go." Even if you have the framerate locked at 20 fps, if the workload in the sim gets heavy enough, the framerate will still drop below that...right down to 1fps if need be. In fact, I've noticed that when I do choose to lock the framerate at some lower number, I consequently see my low end framerates get even lower. Unlocked, I'm pretty much always running between 40 and 60fps (I use vsync so 60 is the max I'll see). Locked at 30, I'll sometimes see the framerate drop momentarily to 26-27 as textures load or what have you.

Please refrain yourself from posting about topics you know little about as it tends to confuse people reading it as help. It also doesn't help to go in mid topic and state that no more then 30fps is needed while many posts before you are trying to explain why it's not. READ THE POSTS :(

Well that is very false. I have been playing flight simulator for over 6 years and I think I know what I am talking about. Thanks :(

Ok, well I am not into "real world studies" as much as you are, but fighter pilots are TRAINED to see over 30FPS. Your average Joe, is not gona see over 30. Unlimited frames is also damaging you computer by heating up and cooling down at rapid times to keep up with your frames. Locking at 30 means the sim is going to try its hardest to STAY at 30. Its going to try to keep it from dropping to 27 etc. Though, it also is not going over. For exsample, if you are locked in a room, you cant get into the room, nor out of it, therefore, you are STUCK IN THAT ROOM! 1 last thing. Arent you proving this guys point if you are arguing about Frame Rates then?

Just a caution to please keep this thread civilized. It's on it's way to becoming a train wreck.

Nobody is arguing about framerates. We're trying to answer the question posed by the OP. Fighter pilots aren't "trained to see over 30fps." They just have excellent eyesight. Its a qualification for the job. I'm an average Joe (afaik) and I can "see over 30fps" quite easily. I can very definitely tell the difference between 30 and 60fps. Over 60, I don't notice a huge difference, but up to 60 very much so. As far as unlimited frames damaging your computer, this is utter nonsense. Sorry, but you must not have spent any time playing games other than FS in all your six years of experience. Modern GPUs are designed to run and maintain very high framerates. I've been gaming on PCs since the early eighties. Grand Prix Legends was designed to run at 36fps back in 98. Nowadays 60fps is more or less the industry standard for gaming. As long as you know yr gpu isn't overheating at any time, running unlimited frames isn't going to damage anything. I've been doing it for years now. And again, you are wrong in your assumption that locking the framerate at 30 is going to make the sim try its hardest to STAY at 30. Its simply an upper limit lock. The sim won't go over 30fps. It's not going to do anything at all to keep the framerate from dropping below 30fps. There is no auto-LOD adjustment being done so that if the frames start to drop below the lock limit the sim drops detail or something to keep it up there. Just not the way it works. There is an "AUTO LOD" entry in the cfg but afaik it has been disabled since before FS2002.

Fighter pilots go through extencive training to get their eyesight to be at its absolute best. If you have ever talked to a fighter pilot, witch obviously you have not, you would know that. Also, there is a study and evedence to back up the fact that humans can only see up to 30 FPS. You cant tell the difference. Although you want to make yourself sound awesome, you are not doing a great job. In fact, you are doing everything BUT that. As for gaming, yes, I play tons of games and would say that I know alot about them, but again, you said "gaming computers are designed so they wont get damaged in any soft of say by differing temp's." Im sorry to break it to you buddy, but not everyone is as perfect as yourself. Not everyone has a gaming computer. In fact, the maker of this topic has a pretty low computer for Flight Simulation, so his WOULD be damaged. Lastly, I dont think you really have any idea what you are talking about with your "AUTO-LOD" bull ****. Do us all a favor, LET IT GO! OH! And BTW, QUOTE:"most major motion pictures are shot at 24-34 frames per second is because that is what looks most similar to how our eyes see motion." ---Motion Picture Association of America---

I am not a mod on this forum, but JetlinerX, I think you crossed every line with this post and I hope this thread gets closed.I'm just gonna state some facts to correct some issues that keep rising:1) Motion Picture has nothing to do with the computer screen - as said already many times2) Damaging comptuer with the software - utterly impossible for a >normal< user (if you do the "right" things, yes, you can damage it - overvolt it, overclock it and run orthos for couple of days - voila, a recipe for disaster), and it doesn't matter if "gaming" or "non-gaming" machine3) What fighter pilots see, the thing with 30fps, again, NOTHING to do with the computer screenI would be very interested into some studies that YOU read about human eyes capable of only seeing 30fps, because I am sure I can see more.

It would appear that my friendly caution was not heeded. I ask everyone to please review the AVSIM terms of use as can be found by clicking on the link in my signature. Also, this forum prevents foul language from being used, therefore replacing it with asterisks is an intentional display of disrespect. Sorry folks, but this one needs to cool off.*LOCKED*
