Underpowered?

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm currently running an Intel Q9550 @ 4.0GHZ, Gigabyte EP45C-UD3R motherboard,Evga GTX285, 2 500GB 7200RPM hard drives, 1 150GB Velociraptor (FSX),a 1TB external hard drive, an external DVD burner. All of this is powered by a PC Power and Cooling 610 watt PSU. While I haven't had any lockups or crashes, I will occasionally get some graphic anomolies. I can't help but thinking that this rig might be underpowered. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Power in must equal power out ... this one is fixed in stone..So for DC circuits Power = Voltage x Current ...Your hard drives will have their power requirements on them for example:WD 1 TB 5.25 internal is rated .92amp at 5VDC, .9amp at 12 VDC for total power of 15.4 wattsHitachi 320 GB .730amp at 5VDC, .640amp at 12VDC for total power of 11.3 wattsIf you overclock you will have to modify your power usage for your CPU, but it shouldn't be too hard to determine yourtotal power usage for your PC.. just for good engineering practice add 10% extra power and if your under your PC power supply's power rating you should be OK.Add up your extra cards, ie. video, sound if you have it and such... and there you go...

I run the rig in my sig on a Corsair 550W PSU with no problems. I doubt your PSU is under-spec'd. Faulty perhaps, but not inadequate. You should download OCCT and run the GPU stress test as graphical glitches are usually a sign of a faulty graphics card. My GTX 285 had to be RMA'd because it was faulty from the factory, but the replacement I've received works fabulously and even overclocks very nicely.

Thanks for your replies. Max, I use OCCT to overclock, but I've never used the GPU portion. I'll give it a try.
