4gb Switch?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I was looking around and found that you can allocate 4gb of Virtual Memory to FSX if you add a line to the exe header. Would I benefit from this with 6 gb of RAM in Vista 64bit in FSX? If so, where are some instructions on how to perform this edit to the exe. Thanks,James Lunsford

Hi,64Bit OS do not need the switch!

I am on 32 bit Vista and am very interested in activating the 4G virtual memory "switch". Does anyone know how to do this for 32bit OS?Thanks

We're talking about marking the actual FSX.exe to allow it 4gb of virtual memory, not the boot.ini. Waaaay different.
Yes....I'm looking for how to do the 3gb switch in FSX.exe

Hi All,http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=21493"Hello, The followed the direction listed below. CFF is a GUI tool that allows you to enable a w32 bit application to use more than 2 GB of RAM. I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit, so this resolved my issue. got several Out of memory erros when I fly with the great Alphasim SR71 longer distances. Sometimes the error occured five minutes after takeoff. The error occured under SP1 too.So I tried a solution I found for make STALKER ready for run with Windows Vista. The solution seems to work with FSX too. I got no error on flights which crashed before regulary with OOM.Try this only if you have at least 2 GByte of RAM and at your own risk.First download the explorer from http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.phpNext make a copy from fsx.exe. Than start "CFF Explorer" and open the orginal fsx.exe file. Now go to NT Header/File Header and click File Header. Ther you find a button labeld "click here". Click it. And select the mark at "App can handle> 2gb adressest " Save the modified EXE, overwrite the orginal one (You have youre copy saved?).If you run Windows Vista 64 or Windows XP 64 youre ready and didnt need to read on. The rest is only for Windows Vista 32 or maybe Windows XP.Now make Windows Vista (32-Bit) ready to support more than 2 GByte.Open a command prompt with Administration rights. You find it under "Programs->Accessories->Command prompt" click right and select "run as administrator".Enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072" (without quotes) in the command window and press enter. After that restart windowsFor Windows XP there is a similar setting for the boot.ini, but I have no Link to it, should be found be google. For me it solve the problem.Too reset the Increased User Adressspace just start the commandline prompt with Admin right again and enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2048"

If you have FSX SP2, then it's already setup to address >2GB. If you are still on FSX SP1 (Like I am) then you need to set it up with CFF Explorer like Jim instructs. Be careful, you can really mess up the EXE if you do it wrong, and as Jim says make sure you back it up first.

Thanks

Thank you. I have FSX SP2 (Accelerator) so I guess this wont fix my issue (2Gig of RAM and 512meg on my video card). I was hoping this would let me use the full 2.5 GIG of memory that I have but it looks like, with SP2, I alread am doing so.I'm limping along with my system for now and hoping to make it till February to upgrade.....Thanks for the help though. Hi, just to clarify.. there are two separate things going on.. Using the memory you have installed in your machine, and addressing virtual memory. If you have more than 2 GB of real memory installed, you need a 64 bit OS to use it all. In your case, with 2GB installed, this does not apply. If you run into OOM (out of memory) errors in FSX, using a 32 bit OS, you can use the /3GB switchto give FSX a larger address space to run in. This applies to a 2 GB system as well.
