September 20, 200916 yr Hi Folks,I'm trying to take a flight in the JS41 from KAPA in Denver. For some reason I cannot get the engines to start, the RPM's build very very slowly and the starter switch doesn't click off. However the EGT's remain below the limit and there is no engine fire.Is there something I need to do because of the altitude of the airfield at 5793ft?ThanksRob
September 20, 200916 yr The altitude is not the problem, I have flown from there and KABQ, which is higher. You have the classic symptoms of the props not being on the start locks. Dan Downs KCRP
September 20, 200916 yr I may be jumping the gun a bit, but have you checked whether the props are in the start locks (see sticky at top of forum)? That's normally the #1 reason for slow RPM increase on start.
September 20, 200916 yr Author Thanks folks, I'll check again but I'm 99% certain that I was on the start locks. I compared to the pictures shown in the forum and the props looked in the right position, that flat plane appearance when looking side on to the fuselage.Interestingly I tried a manual start and the RPM's rose very quickly, so fast in fact that I couldn't keep up with the manual start process and fried the engine!CheersRob
September 20, 200916 yr Might not be true in this case, but it is possible to view the props in flat pitch but if they are not on the locks they will slowly bleed down to feather. Dan Downs KCRP
September 20, 200916 yr Author Yep, I think it was the locks, thanks guys. Previously I'd fired up the Cessna at KAPA, due to the position of the levers on my throttle quadrant the engine cut out pretty much straight away. I'd then loaded the J41 and the engines cut out. Although from the external view the props looked like they were on the locks I don't think that they truly were, hence the starting problems.I tried again with a proper shut down and the locks engaged, I was then able to fire the engines up correctly. Thanks for your help and happy flying.Rob
