KVM Switch/docking station advice for three computers

Featured Replies

Hello,I had this posted in another forum but I didn't get any bites. Maybe I will have better luck here?I'm trying to work out how I want my set up to be after a add a new i7 rig for FSX.In total, here is the equipment I would like to use together:1 laptop1 FS desktop1 desktop for general use2 wide screen monitors1 4:3 monitor1 keyboard1 mouse1 set of speakersI would like 1 wide screen dedicated to the FS desktop and the other to be able to be switched between the general desktop and the FS desktopI would like the general desktop to use the 4:3 monitor and the wide screen that is shared by the FS desktopI would like the Laptop to be able to use the 4:3 monitorI would like to be able to control all computers with 1 keyboard and mouse. I would like all three to use the same set of speakers.Even Though the laptop has a VGA out for the monitor, I think I would like to go with DVI and USB connections. I can use a VGA-DVI adaptor for the laptop. Can anyone suggest a product or is this possible? I looked at Newegg but I could really figure out what each item would do. Thanks for the help,

Hey duckbilled,jJst came across your thread. I used the KLM switch a ways back. If I remember I had a three monitor setup with two computers. I used two monitors connected to one PC to stretch my windows desktop when I needed it, and the third to use with the second PC. I used 1 keyboard and mouse to switch back and forth. Worked ok. That's what the switch is designed for. Now, not sure about the laptop as that has a built in keyboard. I think you would first have to port that to a "docking station" type device in order to get a keyboard and mouse connector to work with. So that could get pricey.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

I was looking at your sig and didn't see anything about your video cards. I'll tell you my experience. 2 machines, both in my sig.ATI machine, no issues with a KVM switchNvidia machine, nothing but headaches with a KVM switch.Seems the newer nvidia drivers are creating issues with KVM switches. If I use the 182.5 driver, KVM works fine, if I update to newer driver like the 190's, when I switch between PC's, the monitor refuses to start when switched from the ATI to the Nvidia machine. Just acts like it is asleep. I have a Startech KVM, dual DVI and USB ( about 6 months old) which according to the reviews is supposed to be pretty good. Seems the Nvidia card sends a signal to the monitor and the switch can't pick it up or something. Advise from Startech tech support is to stay with the older drivers, not something I'm keen on doing. Definitely a driver issue because as soon as I roll back to 182's, everything is fine again. So, before you buy, make sure it works with the card and drivers you want to use.Larry
