October 1, 200916 yr Guys,First of all, sorry if it's the wrong forum category. This week a freeware repaint group from Brazil (Texturas Brasileiras) found out that their work was being put available without their approval on this FS dedicated site, called HangarFS.com. As if the unauthorized freeware redistribution it wasn't enough, the guy CHARGES a monthly fee to users to download FREEWARE content and SELLS DVDs with these freeware addons, as you can see on the 2nd link:http://www.hangarfs.comhttp://cd-dvd-usados.vivastreet.com.br/jog...dd-ons/11325560A visit to this site allows anyone to see that this guy named Paulo Henrique Fagundes is violating freeware copyright not only from brazilian developers, but from the whole flightsim community, earlier today the excellent texture replacement addon AEU7 was shown on its main page.If any developer finds his/her works on this site, the responsible host was found to be ThePlanet.com. October 5, 200916 yr This has obviously been going on forever, and I think I've had a bit of a change of heart, in that I just don't care anymore. I understand that people get ###### off when someone posts their work to a website, and then charges admission to that website. However, I think that nowadays I just want as many people to download my work as possible, and if someone else wants to host that file, it doesn't bother me at all. I personally don't know why you would want to pay for software that is freely available at AVSIM, but whatever - it's your money. Now, I believe that the original authors should have control over their work, but what real reason is there to prevent someone else from uploading it to their own website? Are we control freaks? Do we have a vendetta against certain websites? Is it just because they didn't ask first? When I first started designing for FS, I wrote several people asking if I could use their objects, etc. In every case, people said yes. When I posted status updates to the design forums, I received constructive criticism and friendly advice. So that is where I'm at today - I think I want to be the helpful guy that allows my work to be shared freely. If I ever get back into scenery design, I will go the extra step to make it open-sourced, ensuring that anyone who wants to will have access to my source files and notes. And why not? I'm not looking for glory, or money, and if someone else is foolish enough to pay for my work, then I don't see how I've lost anything.- Martin My site: www.martinstrong.com/FS_Project.htm
October 5, 200916 yr Thank you for the comment, Martin, it is eminently reasonable and sensible. You are certainly entitled to come to your own decisions concerning this matter, and then so are other members of the community. Many of them are bothered by this type of behavior, and we should definitely extend to them the same respect for their choices as we do to you and others who make the same decision. It all comes down to respect, doesn't it?Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
October 20, 200916 yr OBS: This info is public, anyone can get it from a whois lookup.Just a small point - generally you will not get far complaining to a site owner on matters like this whether Flight Simulation related or not as they can easily choose to ignore you if they lack a conscience. The best procedure is to write to the web host, because they have their reputation to protect and risk losing all the sites they host and ultimately their entire business. In this instance the host is listed as hoteldaweb.com.br, and the usual address for reports is abuse@ so that is where I would first point complaints if I needed to. In my experience, this usually achieves the necessary action.Hope this helps,John My co-pilot's name is Sid and he's a star! http://www.adventure-unlimited.org
