October 12, 200916 yr Hi guys,Yesterday I ran into another issue with the ATC, this time at KLCK (Columbus Rickenbacker INTL). Here is the scenario; quick IFR C172 flight from KCAK to KLCK at 4000 feet, it's dark but good weather. KLCK has two runways, 5R/23L and 5L/23R. 5R/23L equipped with ILS, while 5L/23R is visual only. Akron ATC 80 nm out tells me to expect vectors for visual on 5L. I request 5R so I can do ILS, ATC says OK, follow vectors visual for 5L, sidestep to 5R. Now at this point sidestep is a brand new aviation term for me, but I'm smart, so I think myself, 5R and 5L are obviously run in parallel so follow the vectors that line me up with 5L, then hop over 5R, I'm actually getting excited. Finally I get there, Columbus ATC vectors me in for 5L, but I need one more 45 degree turn to line up, at this point I was already brought down to 2700 feet. Then he transfers me to Rick tower, who gives me the turn and tells me fly straight in to 5R, ok cool I'm like 9nm out, I already had the 5R ILS dialed into my NAV1, so I select the frequency and my CDI tells me I'm looking good, so I turn this over to the AP and select APR. The final is a beauty, localizer and glide slope right down the center. Then at about 500 feet I turn the AP off and fly manually, everything still looking good and about 100 feet from the runway Rick tower tells me to go around, for no apparent reason I had to declare a missed approach. Then he tells me to climb to 3000 and expect vectors ILS to 5R. Huh? I was 5 seconds from landing on 5R. So I'm thinking there may be some issues with this airport as well because I really didn't see any reason why my approach was missed. Unless there is some explanation.
October 12, 200916 yr I used to have this issue once in a while when running FS-9. Drove me nuts!! :( Then I found the simple solution--if you go ahead and land, the ATC cops never come to your house nor does the on board FAA lift your ticket. :( I have since moved to FSX and Radar Contact. Unless there is some explanation. The reason why the ATC told you to go around was because you requested an ILS 5R approach and he told you to sidestep runway 5R (Maybe you forgot what he said exactly but it should be expect vectors ILR Runway 5R sidestep Runway 5L). You did the ILS 5R approach and got to the MDA (Minimum Descent Altitude) and since he said to sidestep 5R you weren't clear to land on 5R, but clear to land on 5L. Since you were not aligned 5L and you were close around MDA he told you to go around. I've done this many times because I keep forgetting :(. What you have to do is request the approach from the ATC (ILS 5R) then you have to hit "Select Runway for Landing" or whatever the option is called in the ATC menu, and select runway 5R (if it's avaliable) only then will you be able to do the ILS 5R and land on runway 5R. :( See You In The Skies...gman!"Impossible things are simply those which so far have never been done." - Elbert Hubbard

I did not forget the earlier sidestep instruction but I figured they came to their mind and let me do the final on 5R ILS without the sidestep. But that's obviously not the case, as I was still required to fly the final on 5L, which leads to the next question; at what point was I supposed to do the sidestep had I been doing the final on 5L? I would think sidestepping at MDA would cut it a little to close, at least for me.

October 13, 200916 yr Tried to duplicate your flight (IFR flight plan night/day), but both times I was given ILS 5R. I could request visual 5L or 5R, and runway 5L or 5R.In your case IIUC you were assigned Visual 5L sidestep 5R which you did. Why you got the go around I don't know. I've found that if you land on the wrong runway, ATC won't say anything until your main gear touches the runway, then ATC says "you are not cleared to land".scott s..
