November 6, 200916 yr Moderator Hi Mark,Glad you've got the problem sorted. AVG9 is quite a different animal to earlier versions. According to some posts I've read Microsoft are happy for AVG9 to disable Defender as they both perform the same function. :( But clearly AVG9 is doing other things that are causing problems - yours being one of them so I would agree that sticking with 8.5 makes sense. I may well revert to 8.5 on my laptop.Happy flying!JD, if others report this problem it might be worth posting a sticky. AVG is a very popular program. Ray (Cheshire, England). November 7, 200916 yr Commercial Member Hi RayI was thinking along those lines too... I too had been using the free AVG8.5 and never got a problem (nor had ever to add any files or paths to be excluded), and upgraded to the free AVG9.0 within the last week or so, and that's when the FS/RC problems started - or was that purely a coincidence??I had previously tried switching off the "resident shield" within AVG9.0 (this effectively disables most of AVG - and even triggers the Windows message about no firewall being detected on the system) - but still got the error problems when running FS. So I was starting to wonder whether this was an AVG problem or not.Anyway I've rolled back from AVG 9.0 to 8.5 and tried my flight again..... NO PROBLEMS AT ALL :( And that was flight of over 1 hour, plenty of time to allow the error message to appear if it was going to.So therefore I too am now convinced that AVG 9.0 is the problem, clearly its a lot more protective than previous versions, and much tweaking would be necessary to ensure FS/RC (and other applications) worked properly. I noted that AVG has a forum, rather limited - needless to say AVG official support seems to be reserved for their paid-for version.I'm going to stick with AVG8.5 for the time being, until I know of a definite fix with AVG9.0 and FS/RC.** Yes - I had also noticed that Window Defender seemed to stop for some strange reason lately, hadn't connected that with AVG9.0. Hopefully another problem solved then. Thanks Ray - and JD - for your help and assistance on this problem.Marki rarely see coincidences when it comes to computer issues like this. if everything is working, and something changes, and something else that hasn't changed a lick stops working, i'm all over the thing that changed, not the thing that has stopped working. 99% of the problems solved here, can be fathomed out pretty quickly by the simple question - "what has changed".that is your smoking gun, your giant neon flashing arrow. :-)glad you figured it out.jd JD Read my blog
November 7, 200916 yr Author Hi RayThanks, I notice a message now appearing at the bottom of the AVG8.5 window "AVG Free edition 9.0 is now available - to stay protected you will have to upgrade your version" !! :( However AVG8.5 is still receiving updates, so I would presume up to date protection is still provided. Unless a way of working with AVG9.0 and FS/RC is found I will be sticking with AVG8.5 until if/when it isn't supported for updates then I may look for alternative anti-virus programs.Years ago I used to use McAfee, however gave up on this as the later versions were becoming too protective and starting to cause more problems than they solved. At one point a long time ago, I even tried Norton (think a trial version was supplied with some other software I purchased), but it took total control of my system - even changing the toolbars as I remember, and I had difficulty doing almost anything. Might be excellent protection, but if you can hardly use PC to actually do anything - then bit of an overkill. Bit like only going out house wearing radioactive suit just in case you get sun-burn. It wasn't an easy task to remove all traces of Norton from my system believe me, however learned then that there needs to be a balance between virus protection, and able to use your PC for what you want to use it for. After the AVG message telling users of AVG8.5 that they must upgrade to stay protected, will be interesting to see if others do - and whether they can get FS/RC to work. Time will tell.Mark
November 7, 200916 yr Moderator Hi Mark,After you reminded me about support for 8.5 ceasing in the not-too-distant future I decided to bite the bullet and install 9 on my two FS PCs. I was curious what would be affected.I run Project Magenta software via WideFS and both the PFC and CDU programs stopped responding with AVG Tray running. As I normally use AlacrityPC to shut down unnecessary programs including AVG Tray I found that by terminating that program I was able to run PM software okay. Funny enough other software like FS Real Time were unaffected by AVG Tray running. :( I haven't stopped AVG Tray on my FS PC and the programs that run on that PC are fine. Looking at Task Manager there are 6 AVG associated executables still running and those don't appear to be causing a problem. I didn't check whether RC was affected by AVG Tray running but my guess it probably would be and would explain your problems. So it seems AVG is stopping some programs from running but not others. That is very strange. But if you run a program like AlacrityPC that allows you to shut down programs see if terminating AVG Tray helps if you decide to return to 9. You can download AlacrityPC from here. http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/I too have turned away from McAfee as being too intrusive and controlling. It used to drive me mad. Ray (Cheshire, England). It used to drive me mad.over the years, i've tried them all. mcafee was a mess at work. norton was too far reaching and cpu hog. and it took an inordinate amount of effort to remove it totally from my machine. it was almost like a virus itself, pieces and parts coming back after i removed them. i used avg for a while, happy with it, but a friend told me about avast. i tried it, and was happier. avg seemed to be expanding into areas other than antivirus. and it was duplicating efforts for what else i was running. i stayed with avast for a long time. never had problems. then i saw avira, which had many good reviews, so i tried it. it worked nicely too. had a nicer interface than avast. when i started beta testing windows 7, there were only a few av programs that were windows 7 certified, early on. i tried norton again, (couldn't get rid of it), kaspersky (too cumbersome, too over-reaching, intrusive, ugly), and i forget the third. i stayed with avira, it sitll worked in windows 7.then i was invited to beta test microsoft security essentials (probably because i beta tested windows live one, notice i never mentioned that? it didn't last long on my machine). i love to beta test, and MSE seemed very light weight, very focused on antivirus, and pretty good (finding something in an attachment to an email in an archive pst file, that no one had found). it's now released, and the last av-comparatives report (http://www.av-comparatives.org/) gave windows live one (same engine as MSE) an advanced+ rating. i've upgraded from the beta version to the released version, and it's working like a champ. between it, and the windows 7 firewall, i feel pretty darn safe. updates are painless, out of site, out of mind. responsiveness is good (when opening a bunch of files, or copying/moving a lot of files, etc). one of the av-comparatives reports show the % overhead that the av program adds to your daily activity. some of them almost double the amount of work the cpu does. i subscribe to this site's rss feed (https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx) and pay attention to what's out there.and there is some interesting telemety gathered by MSE and Forefront/Antigen, that is analyzed and reported semi-annually here https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/SIR.aspx. madagascar looks like a pc friendly place :-)everyone has different tastes, and different comfort levels. with everyone moving to windows 7, might be a good time to date a new av program (mse), and keep the doors locked with a new set of locks (windows 7 firewall).jd JD Read my blog
November 7, 200916 yr Moderator Coincidentally PC Pro (UK) has reviewed MSE in the edition that came through my letterbox yesterday. They are impressed with it and rate it 5/6. It's not without its drawbacks - no auto updates separate from Windows Update and no web protection or email scanner but with sensible internet use those shouldn't be serious problems.I'm wondering if AVG haven't shot themselves in the foot with v9. Certainly not needing run Windows Defender any more (it killed performance unzipping files) is a benefit but preventing EXEs from running with no warning that it's interfering with them is inexcusable.I'm still an XP user but the firewall is still pretty good. Once I've landed in KLAX tonight I shall uninstall AVG and try MSE. Thanks for the tip. :( Ray (Cheshire, England). November 7, 200916 yr Author MSE does seem a good alternative, I am installing this to see if it is as good as it sounds.

Perhaps MS has got something here by offering their own version of virus software free. After all, it's thier products that everyone else is trying to defend you against. I did have Windows Live 1 Care for a couple years and liked the fact that it didn't try to take over my computer as some others do. That's also why, for the past couple years I've been a advocate of AGP. I'd like to think that once they get a few complaints, they'll be back with a fix if it is indeed their problem. Anyway, I'm sure glad I found this post! Whew!I just got a new computer a week ago which includes the new windows 7 (64bit) OS. Since I've used AGP for the last couple years I downoladed v9 as well. I was having the exact same problems by recieving the error 75 and error 52 messages, when trying to run RC, I spent hours trying to figure out the RC problem, not to mention other problems with software reloads.FYI, eariler this week I had trouble loading some Addon scenery. I suspected the windows 7 firewall and disabled it with some success, but I really think it was only because I tried some other work-arounds as well. I finally loaded some scenery by picking the cashe it, then choosing the direct load. I don't know if this was AGP related, but things have just been miserable trying to reload my FS software all week. The RC problem was just as mentioned above: run time error 75 RadarContact.fsuipc.rcv4 code. I received the same error message plus (error 52) as well. After reading this thread I decided to uninstalling AGP v.9 and installed the Micrsoft MCE virus software. At first I was about to dismiss AGP v9 as the culprit, but remembered that, when reloading RC v4 into the new computer, error messages with a choice to "abort" or "retry", kept popping up
November 8, 200916 yr Author While MSE might be on option, reading what others have said here has prompted me to see what other anti-virus options are available...Noticed that my own ISP provide (on the level I am on) a free virus scan utility which comes with a few other useful things such as advanced disk clean as well as links to disk defrag, network monitor and so on - all conveniently in one neat little box. OK then I see that its actually provided by McAfee - who I've had problems with before when its later versions become too intrusive. :( However this package (BT Net Protect Plus) actually seems to be the bits of McAfee that I actually want (without the unnecessary control elements), and a few other useful bits thrown in. Although its advertised as being free, its actually paid for as its included in my broadband internet, so may try this until (if) I find problems. Certainly works OK with FS/RC, which was the initial problem. :( Certainly learned a bit about the different anti-virus programs out there, and hopefully now found the solution for my system.
November 14, 200916 yr Glad to found this thread! I've only a few day RC4 (flying FSX) and trying something out. But yesterday I had twice a stop with RC and the same message :"RUN TIME ERROR 75, RADARCONTACT.FSUIPC.RCV4.CODE".And I've also running AVG Version 9.0.707, so after reading here first I deinstalled AVG and want to install Version 8.5. But there is no chance everywhere. So I unstalled AVG 9 once more and stopped it with starting FSX with Alacrity. Unfortunately there is no desktop with all my icons and the taskbar visible, when Alacrity starts (don't know why?). So I stopped AVG manually (resident protection) before running RC4. And so far everything is OK.

It really is one add-on that I can't fly without - that is why at no point in when I was getting errors with RC4/FSUIPC would I EVER have considered flying without RC4, which may have been another solution to the problem. Default ATC and that horrible squelch problem when trying to acknowledge tower for the 20th time; instructions and aircraft confirmations being totally out of sequence; not to mention the incorrect phrases and terminology - you will notice the improvement with RC4 immediately..
