November 27, 200916 yr Hi All,I just upgraded my RAM from 2 x 512mb to a 1GB plus 1 x 512...only the 1GB is showing in Everest? I suspect it must be 2 x 1GB ( Max ) to function as my previous 2. 512's worked ok, but Im curious in case there is a tweak, here is my board spec:Gigabyte GA-8SIMLNF...Packard Bell iMedia 3043....two DIMM slots only and again a Max of 2x1GB RAM DDR1 PC2700 333mhz 2.5V.All good advice welcome.Berne :(

If it does then your board is not duel channel and does not need matched pairs of memory (Most are however) so what you might have to do is buy another 1 gig memory module and replace the 512Mb module with the 1Gig module. Keep in mind that you should always install matching pairs of modules as just about all systems require matched pairs of memory in order for dual channel memory to work. That means that each module has to be the same size, speed , make and model.Dan Martin Flight Ontario
November 27, 200916 yr A quick searce shows your ram is not dual channel. As already stated, BIOS should show amount of ram. Or right click My Computer/select Properties, and that should show how much ram is installed.Bob Bob i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.
November 27, 200916 yr Author BIOS is showing only 1GB of RAM....so is properites in my computer. The Crucial website has a mem conifg...when I enter my moby stats it states under FAQ as you people say that pairing is not necessary as indeed my board does NOT support ( as far as I can determine ) Dual Channel memory, also the page goes onto say that memory stick size can also be mixed i.e. my current situation should be OK. This one has me curious....I have updated the BIOS version so we can rule that out. We know both the sticks are working as I had the 512 working before todays 1GB insertion, so rule that out too. Re the Crucial Mem config page...that could be wrong and the board could well support only Dual Channel ( but I cannot see this ref in the board manual ) , but this would back up the pairing issue and a full 1GB did work when 2x512mb sticks we used in recent times. Time will tell.Thank you for the replies.Berne :(

It's possible you have a marginal stick of ram I.E one that works well with another identical stick but not with a different model\size in the other slot. One more thing what CPU do you have installed in your system? The reason I ask is just about all CPU's since the P4 (socket LGA 775) and all AMD CPU's since the Althon xp have a 128 bit data bus and are dual channel by default although they can run in single channel mode (64bit) as well when (only one module is installed in a single slot in a bank of memory) in your case it looks like you have only one bank (2 slots) of memory that can be installed on you mobo . It's also possible that your memory sticks are running at different speeds and that's not always a good thing either.Dan Martin
November 28, 200916 yr Author Hi,It seems that one should not buy two sticks of memory from different manufacturers, Ive learned this to my cost. Also buy matching sticks when upgrading from the same company. My CPU is Intel Cel D 335 2.8ghz 256kb with 133FSB quite an old CPU, from a purchase in 2004, today I should receive an P4 Prescott 1MB 2.8ghz 533mhz upgrade, and it will be interesting to see if that CPU can overcome the current memory misconfig, and Ill be very surprised if it does? By the way both sticks concerned are PC2700, the 512mb is from a pair I purchased from Crucial alas the 1GB is an Ebay purchase with no brandname on the module, but still the 1GB shows. Im almost certain Ill be purchasing another 1GB from the Ebay source ( pairing essential ) to max out the boards functionality. As a matter of curiosity, Ill post if the new CPU overcomes the current situation, time will tell.Regards,Berne :(
November 28, 200916 yr Author UPDATE:....Sorry people the new CPU is installed and working but only 1GB detected. :( Regards,Berne
November 28, 200916 yr Have you re-seated the RAM and did you place the 1GB module in the slot closest to the CPU?
November 28, 200916 yr Have you tried to only use the 512MB stick to make sure it's OK, as Dan Martin suggested in a previous post?

Matched memory modules hasn't been a requirement for standard operation since RDRAM, which you do not have. Therefore, your hypothesis is likely incorrect.Start at square one and make sure the modules are installed in the proper fashion, as I've outlined in my previous post.

November 29, 200916 yr Author Hi, I thought I answered your advisory of which Im greatful...to recap...Yes I have tried the 512mb sticks separately and they both work on their own and..as a pair. Now, the 1GB did not work with the 512 when the 512 was placed closest to the CPU BUT as I outlined above the 1GB does now work in its present position which is the DIMM closest to the CPU.-If you still think you can get the 512 to register as well as the 1GB Id be greatful for same, but as a newbie I think I can safely say we have flogged this particular issue A-Z, but then again...?Berne :(
November 30, 200916 yr Unless your board somehow supports dual channel memory operation with only 2 DIMM slots and this mode is also forced on in the BIOS, it is incredibly unlikely that a 1GB and 512MB module cannot operated together asynchronously. You can always try swapping the DIMMs around too. Perhaps your board would prefer the opposite configuration, with the 512MB module closest to the CPU socket. Are the two DIMMs of the same speed, voltage, and timings? Your board seems to be very specific in its requirements for DIMM operation, according to this.
November 30, 200916 yr Author Hi,I want to say thanks for showing such a nice interest in my memory issue..most have nodded off. Further to this, please send a few lines 1,2,3 ect that I should follow and you and I both will give the board the A-Z...keep in mind though that Im really a newbie as far as experience goes but I will try with you to solve this issue. You have the exact board spec which is a great start..oh one other thing on the BIOS issue I previously related that I created a BIOS disk and ran it...BUT ...I dont know if it worked? How would I check to see if it did?Berne :(
