Garmin's SVT product in a sim?

Featured Replies

Hi,Garmin's G1000 EFIS, as well as the G500 and G600 retrofit EFIS systems now come with the Garmin Synthetic Vision Technology.Any sims that have the Garmin System with SVT? It would be nice to have a plug in... Thanks,Dave

Hi Dave,Sure SVT would be nice but you have to consider how much additional processing power it would require within FSX.Flight1's Cessna Mustang has G1000 (no SVT) and it is already very hard on frame rates. I am a great fan of G1000 and actually purchased a G1000 PC trainer directly from Garmin, this one has SVT.But frankly when it comes to simulation of G1000 within FSX we still lack many important features - theyshould be done before we start talking about SVT. No doubt one day we will see SVT in FSX.

The chief problem is that there's no efficient way to generate SVS within FSX. While in theory one could create a "periscope" type view using the CustomDraw C:fs9view:view method, the biggest gotcha that I ran into was that you need a transparent panel background where you want the view window to appear. Otherwise, the panel background will cover the view window, since the panel background (or any elements on top of it) will by default be layered on top of the window. This of course makes it extremely difficult to accomplish in any "glass gauge."The other gotcha that kills the entire idea is that what is seen is simply a repetition of what you can see out the windscreen. The amount of postprocessing required to make the image greyscale (or simulate infrared video), and adjust the image brightness/contrast at night would really be a frame-rate killer! :(
