FS2004 crashing on start up

Featured Replies

I have just bought a new computer and am reinstalling FS2004. My old PC was dying fast, and so I backed up my whole FS2004 installation, including all addons, onto an external hard disk in preparation for the new installation. My old PC ran Windows XP SP3, but my new one runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It is based on an Intel Core i7 860, 4 GB RAM, GeForce GTS 240 and 500 GB hard disk. I installed FS from the CDs and then added the patch for FS9.1, and after that installed the No CD patch. After each stage I ran FS and checked that everything was running fine, which it was. Then I copied over my entire back up installation. The intention here was to take a lot of the pain out of a complete reinstallation, because all my config files would be correct and so on. I then ran FS and found that there were a few errors on the Scenery.cfg, as on my old PC I had FS installed on a faster and larger second hard disk, and some of the scenery layers were referencing to a path on my old F: drive instead of a C : drive. That was quickly fixed, and I ran FS again. The splash screen came up fine, but as soon as the main menu screen appeared I got an error message stating that Flight Simulator has stopped working, and that Windows is trying to find a solution. A few seconds later I got a second error message stating that "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." You then have to click on a button closing the program. I am getting the same problem every time I try to run FS. Windows never tells me what the error is caused by, and neither does it offer a solution.Clearly there is a problem with what I copied over from my back up. I would add that everything was running fine on my old PC when I performed the back up, so there shouldn't be any corrupt files as far as I am aware. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be the problem here? I really don't want to have to go back to square 1 and reinstall everything bit by bit, because that will take hours. I have things such as FSUIPC, SquawkBox and FS Navigator installed, but these are internal modules within FS. It has occurred to me that the backed up installation also included files for Active Sky which are housed in the Modules folder, but that I haven't yet reinstalled the actual Active Sky program which resides in its own folder outside of FS. Could this be the cause of the conflict? Could it be that when FS is loading it is seeing these dll files for Active Sky, but cannot reference them to the Active Sky program? I realise I could always try to install Active Sky and see what happens, but I would like to see whether anybody has any opinions on this before I do. Thanks for your help.

Hi,Move your FS9.cfg file out and let FS build a fresher file.It is probably not caused by AS not being installed.

I have just tried that, but FS still crashes at the main menu.Any other suggestions?

Hi,Is there an Error details button you can look at?

Hello Adrian, I think you may have already given yourself a hint on the cause of the problem, so further investigation might be worthwhile. You stated that you copied over a lot of files into your new installation and I remember from the past that not only most payware but also some freeware creates registry entries and checks these on start-up of the sim. I suspect these entries being absent may be the root of your troubles, or at least worth eliminating as a possibility. It would of course mean removing then reinstalling your add on stuff,...sorry for that. However as you said, all was going well until you started that portion of the reinstall. As a little side note I keep a complete copy of Fs9.1 on my external Hdd and when, on the rare occasion that I do have to reinstall I do run the installers for the free and payware ( which BTW also properly registers the uninstallers ) then I go back and copy in all the tweaks and changes, etc.I hope this helps you out, but please keep in mind this is only one possible cause / fix to explore. One more thing, I run Win Xp not W7 so I have no knowledge about the inner workings of W7. I would think it would be the same for both Op. systems but someone with W7 experience might have a different take on the issue, hint, hint.Best regards,Mel

Thanks for this Mel. Could I ask you to clarify your procedure a bit? You say that you keep a complete copy of FS9.1 on your external HDD - I presume this includes all the free and payware? You then reinstall FS9.1 from the CDs and patch. Am I right in saying that you then install the freeware and payware into the new FS9.1 installation so that the the correct registry entries are made, and then you copy over the entire backed up copy of FS9.1 which will include all the tweaks? Have I understood this correctly? Thanks. To reply to Jim's posting, there is no error button available, so you are not told what is causing the error.

Yes that is correct for the most part, although I don't simply dump and overwrite everything, more of a selective procedure. Here are a few examples, assuming a Fs9 then Fs9.1 then Fs9.1 no Cd patch and after installing payware (ie Aircraft, UTusa, UTCan-Alaska, ActiveSky and necessary patches etc.) and freeware (ie GlacierBay, aircraft etc.)1#: after Ultimate Traffic is installed; in the new installation I delete everything in the corresponding folders and copy in everything from the related backup folders; restores that to the pre-reinstall state.2#: delete the contents of the main texture folder and copy in the content of the backup; restores sky, clouds and all to pre-reinstall state. ( same done with sound, gauge, effects etc. )3#: delete content of aircraft folder and copy in contents of backup; restores all AI and user aircraft, panels and tweaks etc.4#: same as above with scenery (restores AI traffic etc.), modules and anything else where there existed anything I did not want to loose or redo.5#: you get the idea. This is all based on having corrected whatever required the rebuild in the first place.I have saved myself time and lots of depression a couple of times with no apparent bad consequences.Regards,Mel

Hi all,I'm a little confused by the explanations above, but something similar has happened to me. I just uninstalled FS9, then reinstalled it. I double-clicked the icon to make sure it worked, and the sim crashes right after the welcome screen (the one that shows a DC-3 in the foreground). No messages or anything. The sim installed completely, and it happened when I clicked "run". I tryed restarting my computer, but it's doing the same thing. Any ideas?
