C182RG and WAAS...?

Featured Replies

I am thinking about getting the RXP GNS530. Now it has WAAS... which means (AFAIK) you can do GPS approaches (?) and you get lateral and vertical guidance on an approach. Right? (If not, which could well be :( let me know.) Now I was thinking about putting the 530 in my C182RG... but then I thought: how am I going to follow vertical guidance when my VOR gauge only has (old fashioned) lateral guidance...?The guidance isn't shows on the GPS itself, is it? So I would need another VOR gauge...? Or...?I also wonder if WAAS is only meant for GPS approaches or can you load (for instance) a VOR approach and will the GNS530 be able to let you follow that too, but then with GPS guidance? If you still know what I mean...?It may be clear I don't know much about it all. :(

Your C182RG VOR1 gauge should have a glideslope needle for vertical guidance also. How else would you fly ILS approaches? If it doesn't have a glideslope needle then you need to replace it with a VOR1 gauge that does. The default C172 VOR1 gauge has a glideslope needle. The RXP 530WAAS will use the glideslope needle for GPS approaches but it will not automatically fly the vertical guidance meaning the autopilot will only couple to the 530WAAS lateral guidance. You must fly the vertical guidance manually following the glideslope needle. You can use the 530WAAS for VOR approaches also and lateral guidance will be available.Todd

My mistake: the C182RG does indeed have a glideslope needle: my other favorite plane, the C185F does not however. Those Carenado planes are copies of very old planes :( and aren't really IFT aircraft! So vertical guidance is only there for GPS approaches: I wonder how many GPS approaches are in the database of the GNS530...? I had the idea WAAS would somehow magically give me lateral and vertical guidance on all airfields, no matter what. :( So all in all it's the same as the default FSX GPS, apart from the vertical guidance on GPS approaches.

Download the (free) Garmin 530W trainer and test out a couple of airfields! The RXP gauge uses the identical Garmin database.http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3532The Garmin database is not the same as the FSX database so some airfields may have different approaches available.

The Reality XP GNS530 is in NO WAY the same as the default FSX GPS!Maybe your questions would be better asked and answered at the Reality XP forums: http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_topics.asp?FID=12If you're looking for a non real world gauge that will provide lateral and vertical guidance at all airfields then navigate to the following web page and scroll down to the Avionics section: http://www.fs2x.com/Freeware.htm Todd
