The DC-10 did have a few fairly spectacular accidents in its day; one was famously photographed, another caught on film, but it is perhaps unfair to claim that it has terrible accident record. Public perception is often altered when things happen visibly, so the well photographed demise of two DC-10s can be regarded as disproportionally tainting the perception of the DC-10's safety. For a total of 446 DC-10s produced, around 30 have been lost in accidents, making it on average, comparable to other jets of the same generation in regard to safety, and it is worth noting that a good many of these were not caused by a fault in the aircraft itself. So, not the best of statistical safety records, but certainly not the worst, and much of what has occurred with the DC-10 over the years has led to improved safety of airliners in general, which is often the price companies pay for having lead the way. Worth noting too however, is the fact that, over the years, the DC-10 has been safely landed on a number of occasions with some quite bad damage from various engine mishaps that might have been more critical for other aircraft.Ironically, the DC-10 is responsible for the demise of the Concorde, since it was in fact a piece that fell from a Continental DC-10 onto the runway at CDG which caused the crash of an Air France Concorde, That accident being the catalyst for the type's withdrawal.Al
