Landing gear failure

Featured Replies

Hi.I bought the PMDG MD-11 for FSX today.I did a search of this forum but didn't find a problem like this. I was doing the Tutorial Flight for the first time. Everything went like clockwork until I got to the point where I had to lower the landing gear. When I clicked on the gear lever, the center gear deployed, but the main gear and nose gear didn't even move. Unfortunately, I didn't take a screen shot to show you, but it looked pretty funny with just the center gear lowered. Is there anything that could have caused this to happen? Like a hidden failure? I'm sure that there were nothing set for failures. I had to do a Go-Around, but after wallowing around the skies for a while the landing gear never budged. The center gear was happy to lower and raise. Weird! As this was my first flight in it, I did a lot of pausing and re-reading the instructions in the tutorial to get everything right, so I believe I didn't miss anything. I never completed the flight because of that.Any help would be appreciated.BTW. Great job on the MD-11. It's fantastic! It's also going to require learning how to program the FMS with it being so different from all the others I have.Mark

Did you get 4 green lights when you lowered the gear? If so, then enable advanced animations in FSX menu. Its in there somewhere.

Hi BryanI didn't get 4 green. I only got the one green light for the Center Gear, the Main Gear and Nose Gear were all red. They didn't even start to lower. Raising and lowering the gear only allowed the Center Gear to raise and lower. :(I have a few other add-on aircraft which require the advanced animations to be enabled, so it isn't that.

You did pull the main gear lever and not the center gear lever?

@ Paul. Yes I did pull (click) on the landing gear lever (many times) and not the center gear button. The center gear was the only one to lower and give me a green light.Well it gets worse. :( I tried doing the tutorial flight again. And once again it happened at exactly the same place. I did notice that the FMS was showing an "ILS UNTUNABLE" message! I also got a "PATH ERROR"I chose to do a manual landing this time but I was not able to, because no mater what I did, I was unable to lower the nose and main gear. I only got the center gear lowered. To some degree I think I am at fault because I haven't read a lot of the manuals yet. I was just so eager to jump in and fly it. The tutorial was the only way to get up there fast.MarkEdit: I'm doing the flight again. If the same thing happens, I will take some screen shots to show what is happening.

I believe I have solved the riddle to my problem. :( The clue is in the "ILS UNTUNABLE" notice in the FMC. On page 23 where it explains how to clear the VOR and NDB frequencies in the NAV RAD page, you then need to press the right VOR button on the MCP. Well I was also pressing the left VOR button. This seems to turn it OFF and that meant that the ILS frequency couldn't be tuned in and therefore the Autopilot wasn't able latch on to the ILS approach. It appears to me that this must somehow prevent the main gear from being lowered. If that IS case, I hope I don't ever have to do a manual landing!I'm guessing that further reading of the manuals (a big read) will lead to a more normal solution that I am not aware of at the moment.Thank you for the help. I'm off to try some flights to see how I go.Mark
