No ground scenery shadows in FSX?

Featured Replies

Hi - new forum user here, I'm just getting back into simulators after quite a few years now I have some powerful computers to play them on :( I have both FS2004 and FSX, and while spending a bit of time tweaking and configuring each of them I noticed that the ground scenery shadows in FSX don't seem to work at all.I set up a quick test flight flying west out of London City airport at sunset, and in FS2004 I clearly see long shadows from buildings and bridges. However if I set up the same test flight in FSX I don't see anything at all. My FPS certainly goes down a bit when I check the option for ground scenery shadows, but I don't actually see anything. I've tried this on my desktop machine (win 7x64, Core2quad2.4ghz, 4gb RAM, 512mb ATI 3870X2) and on my macbook (win 7x64 bootcamp, core2duo 2.8ghz, 4gb RAM, 512mb Nvidia 9600M GT) and its the same. Has anyone else noticed this?Kind regardsDave

While I leave the scenery shadow option unchecked, it does work when it is checked with both Windows Vista-32 bit and Windows 7-64 bit.

Dave, FSX handles shadows differently than in FS9, they are lighter and are extremely effected by the cloud coverage/visibility. Personally I can't imagine not having them on and wish there was away to make them darker, especially during overcast conditions. As pointed out, make sure you have the box checked to enable this feature, other than that, no clue.

Best, Michael

Thanks for the input - not sure if its my eyes but I just cannot see *any* difference when the shadows are enabled or disabled - except in FPS. I had a feeling it was a driver issue but now I'm not so sure. I only recently upgraded to Windows 7 x64 and had the same experience with Vista x32 before. What's the best time/weather to really see the shadows? are they more prominent over land or over water (I use 2xlow water BTW, though I have tried various settings).Kind regardsDave

Hmm...I don't use ground shadows, but as far as I remember from testing that setting autogen doesn't have any shadows. Only custom scenery buildings do have shadows. Check that out over London or New York.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was an issue with W7, DX11 and/or Nvidia drivers. I certainly can't resolve the problems here and am going back to XP.One think to try though - try running FSX in DX10 mode and see if it works - that might give you a clue if there is a problem.IAN

Thanks - I have tried in Win7 x64, Win Vista x32 and with both an ATI and an Nvidia card. I didn't try DX10 yet, I'll give that a go right now.Kind regardsDave

I'm sorry to say that DX10 made no difference. I took a couple of screenshots with and without shadows, and if I didn't know which was which I wouldn't be able to tell :( The attachments are scaled down 50% but you should be able to see what I mean.Kind regardsDave
