Vertical Sync for ATI 5870

Featured Replies

1269859410.jpgI got this one backwards. I should have asked the question before ordering the card, but I didn't, and I did. It arrives on Wednesday! So here goes:1. Can vertical sync work in FSX with a Gigabyte 5870? How?2. Can AA be set to get both good frame rates and quality in FSX? How?Will someone that knows how to set things up be my friend and help me? I will forever be greatful, kind, considerate and promise to be a better person and give you all the credit for turning my life around!Stephen

Stephen,on AA, see my post here:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=279903Michael
Thanks Michaelth,I had read that thread but it provided no answers. I do use DX10 and do not select the AA within FSX since that does not work right. There are reported ways to set up AA and vertical sync inside of FSX through the ATI Catalyst control, sort of the way Nhancer forces these in Nvidia based systems. There are members of AVSIM that I remember reading that have reported to have been able to do that one way or another in earlier threads. Does anyone know how to do this that still frequents here?Stephen

Stephen, where did you read this? How does one set FSX AA with the Catalyst CC?Michael

Stay tuned and wait for the right guru's to answer my questions. Then we will both find out. Meanwhile I suggest you go back and read the threads all the way back to the fall of last year. I just finished all of them, and yes, there are ways. Stephen

Never mind,The order is cancelled. It seems I was buying a bit of a pig in a poke since it proved impossible to confirm that the 5870 would work without significant issues in FSX. After all, this overclocked GTX275 works very well and fast as it is. Still on Team Green, at least for now.Stephen

If Bob's solution doesn't work, on March 18 I posted an alternative for an ATI 5850 that is simple and should work for a 5870, too. Basically, just download RivaTuner, although you don't need to use the RivaTuner application itself. In the RivaTuner folder (in Tools) there is utility called D3DOverrider. Open that application, set start with Windows On, Force Vsync On and Force Triple buffering off. I also suggest muting sound indication (get an X on the speaker symbol) and disable RivaTuner event logging. The solution takes only a few minutes to implement. It worked for another user (crashmax) who suggested triple buffering off. Vsync works now. With the ATI 5850, I'm running 8xAA 16xAF, usually locked at 40 fps with almost all sliders far right. My sense is better visuals, especially of clouds, than the previous NVIDIA, (an 8800GT). Frame rates are significantly higher with the new VC at higher settings. In short, worth a try and don't give up on the ATI.dolesrus

Thank you very much, dolesrus. It works fantastically for my ATI 5870. Screen tearing, especially when panning the VC, is totally gone now!

Please tell me, how do you bring up 8xAA 16xAF. I have installed the latest ATI 10.3 driver. Neither the Catalyst CCC, nor the latest ATI Tools have any visible effect on FSX.Michael

Do you not get weird texture load in problems, black screens between views etc using D3DOverrider with the 5870? I had those issues when I tried it with my old 4870 attempting to get Vsync in FSX.

No, I do not see any disturbances which could be related to the D3DOverrrider. The only problem that I now have with my ATI 5870 is described here (but it has nothing to do with D3DOverrrider):http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=279903I still find no way to switch on 8xAnti-Aliasing outside FSX to get rid of those ugly square artifacts!Regards,Michael
