Ground Spoilers

Featured Replies

Hi all,I want to be sure I understand the use of the ground spoilers on the MD-11. When flying other jets, rather it be the 737, 747, or the 767, when I arm the ground spoilers, they automatically deployed after touchdown. But on the MD-11 that doesn't occur, and I do arm the spoilers on the final approach. Another thing I noticed is that the deceleration seems to be very slow and the plane uses up all of the runway just to stop. So my question is that on the real MD-11, do pilots have to move the lever to the ground spoiler position to deploy them immediately after touchdown or do the ground spoilers automatically deploy after touchdown as with other jets? I have updated to version 1.2.Ken Manning

Yes they should automatically deploy when armed, partially at main gear touch down then fully at nose gear touch down.

Hi Ken, are you using any hardware device? I had an issue with my goflight module. Spoilers were moving according to the position of the spoiler handle in manual operation but the did not deploy automatically.regards, josch

When you get the 'Retard' notification just before touchdown, use F1 to zero the throttles, then F2 to Reverse idle. You should then get proper spoiler deployment. The deployment logic appears to depend of throttles being at zero (rather then less then a small value) which can be an issue with external controllers and their dead zones.

How do you get the 'Retard' call with the MD-11? I only get the ..50...40...30...20......10 call like on the Boeings. Is it a selectable setting on the PMDG menu somewhere? Or is it dependant on spoiler handle position or something like that? Thanks,Subin Jacob

On the FMA (Speed/thrust part), it indicates RETARD, but doesn't call it.
