FPS Limiter Question

Featured Replies

I'm hoping someone can help me with the FPS limiter, since it's a key component in the BP=0 stability equation. Has anyone else noticed that sometimes it seems to just stop working or shifts focus to another application?I definitely notice the issue when running FSINN, although it may happen when not using it too. Essentially, I'll hit the frame rate counter and notice that it's sustained way up over 30. I'm wondering if the top-most window is what the limit gets applied to, and, since i'm running FSINN in-game, perhaps it's applying to that instead?...Anyone else seen this or know how things work behind the scenes? Thanks!

That was news to me. I got the impression that running FSX with unlimited fps was a common to the simmers that applied the BP=0 tweak. The pinned topic with Jesu's screen captures show that you should use unlimited fps in FSX: http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=281538

Correct, you run unlimited in-game and run the FPS limiting tool to cap them. Unlimited frames in-game gives you better frames per second in general. Running the FPS tool to cap them using an external application keeps you from overwhelming the video card and crashing your system.Edit: For clarity, here is the excerpt from the pinned BP=0 post"Now, if you fly COMPLEX a/c specially using the VC you NEED to set it to unlimited! however... there is a problem ;) what happens with what I just told you about the sim working HARDER the higher the frames? what happens if frames start jumping from 30 to 60 then to 25 and again to 60? where is the 'balance' here?? what if you have UsePools=0? what do you expect will happen when you get a 'sudden' jump to 70 FPS? CRASH! ;) besides... the 'perceived' sensation (because is not real) when frames 'jump' is a 'stutter' so you need 'smoothness' consistency... and thats were the EXTERNAL frame rate limiter can help you ;) capiche?"

I see. My fault - Sorry. Well it seems that you have to find some kind of tweak to get the FPS Limiter to work OK. I remember that I read a post a couple of days ago about a problem with the FPS limiter not limiting the fps as it should when using the BP=0 tweak. I wonder if this is a common problem or if it's system dependant? Any way - I'm not using the BP=0 tweak and have smooth flights with FSX, so let's hope that some tweak guru will chime in and help you out on your problem.

I did run BP=0 with FPS Limiter for a few hours without noticing anything unusual.Regardless of the BP=0 tweak, on my system FPS Limiter occasionally sets itself to a higher value than my default of 20 (it seems to like 30). I only notice if I begin to get stutters in areas with a lot of autogen - I just correct by hitting F11 until I reach a level where everything runs smooth again.

Aha! Thanks Tom, you helped me nail the issue!I use the F9-F12 keys to cycle views.... in doing that I'm probably also changing the framerate!

F12 increases frame rate by one, F11 decreases frame rate by one.

Best regards from RelaxX

I find that if you change to Windowed mode and bring up the DOS window that has FPS limiter in it,you will get a readout of the FPS setting when using F11 and F12. I do this from time to time to check what itis set to.Also, I find that in "undemanding" situations, eg far from the cities, the FPS will creep up to over 30,even with the limiter set to 24, but that does not cause any problems.
