May 21, 201016 yr A friend and me are working on this home cockpit based around MD11 right now. It has a fixed base, completely closed cockpit, with 2 seats and 2 jump-seats. It runs 5 displays and one projector for outside view. The projector uses back-projection trough a mirror for the increased size and is projected on a cloth (not the best quality just yet). There's one display for overhead, 2 for PFD-ND left-hand and right hand and one for EAD screens and one for the radio stack (that is not currently working on Windows 7). We use mouse for input right now (experimenting with dual mouse pointers soon) but planning to switch to either touch-screens or physical switches via MIDI-USB.The whole thing runs on only one computer running FS X but are looking to find a solution to split the displays to a different computer via LAN but without the expensive Project Magenta. As the cockpit is based around screens it can be easily repurposed to any aircraft that allows undockable panels. As for controls, we use Yokes, and Axis from Saitek. Also we use MCP Combo for hardware knobs for the important functions. Here is Alex flying the approach to KJFK VOR approach 13L (also called the Canarsie Approach). This is the first time he flies this approach but still much better then my own trials. Eric Bocaneanu ROvACC Director
May 21, 201016 yr Looks like fun guys. I have always wanted to find an older projector and try a similar project.Do you have any future plans for the project?
May 23, 201016 yr Author Sure. We're going to work on the interface: either use touch-screens for all screens, or create physical buttons connected via MIDI and USB. Then when the 737NGX is released, provided we can split the screens on different computers as we've heard, we're gonna add 1 or 2 more computers to provide processing to the displays. We've got to enhance the outside view somehow. One thing for sure: we need a better mirror. But we are waiting on NGX to see what we can do then.BTW. The whole thing in configured with headsets so we can hear each-other and duties for PF and PNF are simulated when flying on VATSIM when using the radios, but both pilots can listen to ATC. May 23, 201016 yr Author Thanks Dave. I must have seen most of the videos on the Canarsie 13L. When I discovered the approach I was really excited. I can't believe I've been flying for so long without knowing about it. Eric Bocaneanu ROvACC Director
