Trouble landing default Cub

Featured Replies

Hello all. I didn't know if this post should have gone here or under the flight instruction forum because I may be asking for a little advice but I just decided to put it here. Anyway, I recently started a flight from my hometown airport KMGY to Meigs field in Chicago because I had never been there before and had always heard about what a nice little airport it was. My journey includes stops at KCEV, KUMP, KLAF, KMCX (to refuel), and then on to Meigs. I chose to fly the default Piper Cub because it's a great airplane to fly low and slow over a place like Indiana in, with all of it's countryside. Anyway, I have flown the cub many times before and usually the landings are OK, but sometimes on landing (espescially a crosswind landing, even with a slight breeze) the aircraft becomes difficult to control and often flips over. Ususlly if I see this coming I simply pause and turn on 'Ignore crashes and damage'. However, it is still annoying nonetheless. Does anyone else encointer this problem? Is it normal? In my realism settings I have the things like torque and p-factor set halfway between easy and realistic because I still want a realistic flight experience, but this just seems slightly exaggerated. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks,Joe

I agree with you. I have many hundreds of hours in real Aeronca Champs, Chiefs, cubs, etc. The default Cub is not at all realistic in many landing situations. Thousands of persons soloed Cubs and the others in 8 to 10 hours and they couldn't have those characteristics. The default Cub acts more like a Pitts. But otherwise, it's fun to fly.

You have to be quick with the rudder. Try not to stop too suddenly. Also be ready to use aileron to keep the upwind wing level.

I have flown many hours in Cubs also, towing gliders and instructing. I can agree with the person above - the flying characteristics of the default Cub are nothing like the real thing. An inexpensive payware option is the Aerosoft Cub. It is an older product and not cutting edge and I won't say the FDE is perfect, but it's near enough and fun to fly. You get a bunch of variants all for one reasonable price. I recommend it based on moderate price (around $9US as I recall) and a good product.

Thanks everyone. At first I was starting to doubt my flying skills, but now I can rest assured. I also practiced some crosswind landings too. About the payware Cub, I'm pretty sure that's a Super Cub, but I have seen and I am considering buying it. The reviews of it all say good things, and with such a low price, whats to lose?

You are right - the Aerosoft version is a Super Cub. Having grown up in an environment where there were no J3's around, every PA18 was referred to as a "Cub." I always forget that in the US the J3 pretty much cornered the market on that name! :( You won't be disappointed with the Super Cub. You get every imaginable version (floats, amphibian, skis, ski/wheels, tundra tires - different engines from lowest HP up to 150). Combine it with the awesome freeware Glacier Bay scenery (available on AVSIM) and you can have some of the greatest "bush" flying imaginable...

I see you're Pa address. I ferried a 150 hp Super Cub from Tennessee up to somewhere in Pa a few months ago. It had tundra tires. First time I had ever flown with them. Kinda wierd on pavement.

For a freeware Super Cub, I highly recommend the version by J.E. Narcizo over at Flightsim.com. Looks and acts the part quite well.

I know what you mean. "Draggy". (Is that a word?)
