strange ATC behaviour

Featured Replies

That's the first time it happened. I was 80nm from destination and ATC told me to to fly heading opposite to my current heading (I think it said something about holding, but it spoke too fast for me to catch all of it). So I flew it for 40 nm without ATC contacting me again. Then I got bored and turned around thinking that something went wrong with RC. When I was 40nm from my destination ATC contacted me again issuing some strange heading commands making me flying big S shaped track 20nm from airport and changing heading instructions every 20 seconds, then it said it wasn't that hard and I should contact approach. At this time I was 8000ft AGL and 30nm from airport. So what happened there? Did I miss something?Greg

i think what you missed, was a checkpoint. were you flying at 2x or 4x?orit could be you were being held, rc co pilot had the comms, and he/she requested vectors. (holding is covered in the manual)let me know if that helpsjd

I was flying at 1x and I had the comms way before that happened. And the next wp in RC window was the airport so I didn't miss any on the way. I must have been held by delay vectors but I don't know why I didn't get any instructions after the first one until I decided to turn around. I think I heard ATC spelling a waypoint but it was too fast for me to get everything, and when I acknowledged it it only read back the heading.Greg

In the voices setup page of RC there is a speed tab for each and a master for the page. I run mine all the way to the left.If perchance you had an outstanding ack (it still appears on the menu) that would stall RC.Remember prior to receiving vectors (if used) that RC expects you to fly direct from your aircraft's present position to the next filed waypoint as indicated in the RC status window. If you stray from that calculated heading RC will consider you off the filed path. If you were using a STAR and approach procedure in the J41's nav equipment terminal procedures database then those same waypoints must be in the plan filed with RC. (After RC Approach contacts you upon runway assignment acknowledgment you can elect to fly an unsupervised IAP. This happens at about 35 nm out so your terminal procedure waypoints outside of that radius must be in your plan.)While you state you were 80 nm out, just in case you were closer when that happened at 40 nm out, you might have missed an altitude crossing restriction. In that case you would be getting delay vectors until you are at the correct altitude.Holding is an option in RC. Check the manual. It only works if there is a VOR within limited distance of destination.

More info: I was flying to Paris de gaulle airport. The star for runway 8r I had programmed is about 100nm long. That wasn't included in fsx or rc flightplan, but when looking at fsx map I was still on the pink line when I received first instruction to turn around. I didn't have any outstanding acknowledgments and I was on correct altitude. Is it possible that atc told me to fly certain distance or time before heading back? the manual says I have an option to choose between delaying vectors and holding but I didn't get that option.Anyway, I have to slow the speech down so I can get everything it says.Greg

if you can duplicate the problem, make a log, details pinned to the top of the forum. then send me the log. make sure you click debug before loading the .plnjd

The option to turn on a holding type is on the General tab of RC. If the co-pilot is flying the aircraft you will only have delay vectors available else you'll have a you can accept that or via the menu choice the hold pattern options during your flight. See page 111 in the RC manual about the three conditions.

To clarify: I was flying the aircraft and I had the comms. In RC I have holding set to weather. The manual says that when ATC contacts me and wants me to hold I can choose between holding pattern and delay vectors. Weather at destiniation was bad so I think I was being held. After all this vectors from ATC he told me "that wasn't so hard" or something very similar. My question is: could he give me instruction to fly certain heading for a number of miles or certain time and then to head back without further instructions? I just want to know if I missed something.

Vectors are always determined from your present position as you progress. Time is not announced with vectors. Depending how close you were if you were outside of 40 nm then you would have been vectored to line up for the next waypoint if one was in your plan before the airport outside of the approach area (in other words in the enroute phase.) I'm just quoting from the two RC4 beta testers that wrote tutorials and procedures in the manual. If you are in the approach area check for an extended menu item to navigate to destination on your own (IAP).If you want more control do a hold and you'll get an estimated release time. You can then set your holding side and holding leg length in time.
