Folder Permissions- how to restore?

Featured Replies

I'm in a bit of a bind here and wonder if anyone can help.Win 7 (64 Professional) is installed, and I also installed FSX (not any SPs yet), along with my GoFlight module- which installed Ok but would not come "alive" when FSX was started. I have seen this before in XP, where I have deleted (this is from Pete Dawson's forum) the folder Windows\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.Flight.Simulator.Simconnect............. (many numbers after this). Of course, Win 7's permissions prevented me from deleting this folder as I did not own it. After looking on the web, I found this:http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/and used the cmd line to implement the changes to all of Windows/winsxs (there are many folders under this level). Then I could delete the file. Now, I have trouble either repairing or (after uninstalling FSX) re-installing, where I get an error (no number to reference it) when trying to install the SimConnect folder. I figure now that since I "own" Windows\winsxs, that the installer does not own it and therefore can not install the simconnect folder. How do I restore the folder (and all sub-folders and files) Windows\winsxs to the original state? Is this possible? I think that if I can ever get FSX re-installed that I will forget the GoFlight module unless it works first time around next time.Under <right-click> Security, and in "Group or user names", all I see is my name ( Bruce-64), whereas all other folders under Windows have several names including TrustedInstaller, CreatorOwner ans Syatem, as well as my user name and my user name suffixed with "Administrator". Which do I need to restore this winsxs folder to, or even better how can I get it back to the way it was?I'm really having issues with this security system in Win 7, maybe I just need to get used to it..........Any help most appreciated. Thanks, Bruce.

If you made a system image backup after installing Windows 7 you can use system image to restore files. Click on the Start button, click on help and support, and type system image for procedures to do this. You could also try restoring your computer systems files to an earlier point in case those files were backed up prior to your deleting them but I doubt that happened. To restore your system, goto Start, click on Help and Support, and then type restore in the search bar and follow the instructions. You can reinstall Windows 7 using Recovery in Control Panel, under Advanced recovery methods. This method reinstalls Windows 7, either from a recovery image provided by your computer manufacturer, or from your original Windows 7 installation files. You need to reinstall all of the programs that you added, and restore all of your files from a backup. For more information, see "Choosing an advanced recovery method" in Help and Support.Deleting any files in the Windows folder is NOT recommended under any circumstances. Your best option to circumvent Windows security (which sometimes prevents the proper installation of FSX and addon software) is to disable User Account Controls (UAC) as I think I previously pointed out to you in another thread. UAC can cause simconnect not to work properly too in that it will not allow a program on your system to automatically connect to the Internet or interact with other programs if the settings are set too high. As I have mentioned several times before, I disabled UAC on day one of installing Windows 7 and have had no issues with FSX since installing Win7. I do have the Windows firewall turned on and that's extremely important that it is kept on at ALL times and you keep your Windows 7 security updated automatically through the Windows update program. Hope this helps.Best regards,Jim

Thanks Jim,I wrote this late last night and then checked this morning in the Win 7 forum and not seeing it there thought that I hadn't posted this thread, so it's cross posted in both this and the Win 7 forum now, sorry to everyone for doing that.Yes, I do realize that deleting system files is not a good idea, I've sure learnt that. And yes, I did make the UAC adjustment, just as you did, on initial install of Win 7. Thanks.I would be limited, I believe, to doing the Recovery method, so might try that tonight. Also, I have seen another post on the 'net from someone else who did something like this, and it may be possible to assign rights back to those original "users" (such as TrustedInstaller and System), I'll have to try that (assuming that it]s what is happening here). Thanks again, Bruce.

Hello Bruce See this forum post it may be of helphttp://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=80649

BruceEvery time you uninstall and reinstall FSX it seems to create more amore errors and may not eventually install at all, (eg for instance it leaves behind .ddl modules and other modules in the registry that conflict with each other). As I wrote on another forum this is what I would try: "You could try uninstalling again and remove all entries pertaining to FSX from the registry and then run the Windows Installer cleanup utility look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175 . I would reboot in safe mode and use CCleaner to clean the registry, reboot normally and then try another install. My big worry is that by deleting a system file wou may have corrupted or have an incorrect link in the WinSxS folder (and I do not know of any way how you check it for corruption) and in that case you may only be able to install FSX after a "clean" OS install. Let's hope not! :( This folder is vital for a correct FSX installation and its subsequent running.Mad Dog gave you my recommendation to Burkhard on Simflight on how to take permissions of all files on Win 7 and Vista, and it is the first thing to do after a clean OS install and you have disabled UAC (temporarily if you are not sure). (As an aside, IMHO you do not need UAC on a home PC system as long as you have a good router and appropriate security software - I hasten to add that this is a personal opinion)Hope you get this srtedPeterH

Thanks everyone for your replies. It goes without saying that I have learned that changing system files is not good, especially when I don
