Differences between boxed/direct download?

Featured Replies

Is there any difference between this aircraft when purchasing from PMDG directly or via aerosoft boxed product?Does anyone know what you get with the boxed product? i.e disc only, disc + manual, or quickstart guide, fmc guide. etcIs support via pmdg or if boxed product, support is at aerosoft? Will there a be a boxed discount like there is for the pmdg 747? I noticed there is not one available for the md-ll as yet.If precisionmanuals.com was no longer operating, domain was down or expired for example. What would happen with the online validation, if re-installing or a fresh install of the aircraft? Thanks in advanced and regards.

Aerosoft Boxed Version contents:

  • DVD containing the installer and liveries
  • Printed manual
  • Printed tutorial
  • Cockpit overview foldout

Aerosoft offers support for the MD11, but I recommend PMDG's own support and this forum. Not sure about the other questions. Please have a look at the forum rules. They require that you post under your real name. Thank you.Regards

Thanks for the reply.
It might be worth to note, that the printed manual is NOT the complete manual, it's just basic information. You'd still need the PDF files coming from PMDG on the disc. Also the printed tutorial is the basic tutorial only.Personally I see no need to buy boxed products these days.Regards,Markus

Some poeple would argue, that you get more bang for the buck.Yes, you can always back-up downloads on optical media and USB devices, but a printed box is just prettier.Aerosoft accepts direct debit payment, which is very convenient for German/European customers. They also offer deals and discounts. I purchased both my MD11X and 747X through them, during their FIFA World Cup promotion, not long ago (thank you Müller & Co for the many goals). Since I already purchased the FS9 version of both planes via PMDG this was a great way to upgrade my fleet to FSX without spending another 150$. The one big disadvantage is the release delay.Regards

Just wanted to add my own take on download ~vs~ Disc:For a lonnng time I wanted to have nothing but discs. Whether it be cd or dvd, I had to have it or would not buy it. I was younger and it was primarily for backup reasons and partly due to just wanting to look in my huge cd wallet and see everything I had (yeah, I know, that's corny :()Now for the past few years I always keep everything on a seperate drive (D:\) with a back up of it on a usb drive. It makes everything 1000% better and so much faster to install my 80gb's worth of FSX addons. Besides CD's get scratched, cd drives are too slow and I just have no interest in crawling under the bed looking for my CD wallet anymore :)

My problem with boxes is this... Just think about where all that money goes if you buy a box... Exactly, to the retailer, for packaging, advertisement, and whatever else. But I want my money to go directly to the developer, all of it. So whenever a developer sells the software themselves online, I'm all for it! I could live without software retailers, but I certainly couldn't live without the software developers!Of course if a software is only available through the retailers then I'm all for it and support them too, but even then I don't want my money to be wasted on packaging and DVD pressing and I buy online whenever possible. But whenever a developer sells on his own, I'm all for it, I need them much more than the retailers. Please note that this is just my PERSONAL opinion about the matter.Cheers,Markus

Markus,I see your point, but it's not like all the money goes into development if you buy from PMDG directly. They need to maintain their servers and e-commerce system, too. Their complex copy protection system can't be cheap either. My take on this is, that retail is a good vehicle for PMDG to reach customers they otherwise could not. Retailers like BestBuy or Aerosoft purchase large contingents of PMDG's products. The wholesale profit margin might be lower, but the total number of units sold should make up for that easily. After all PMDG could care less if a boxed copy reaches a customer in the end. They sold it already. If it was bad for their business they would not do it. Unless normal customers start buying 200 MD11X's each, I dare to say that retail is vital to PMDG's success. I have no idea what the margin for the retailers is, but I suspect it to be rather low and in the end PMDG earns almost the same with every copy, no matter how it is sold.Of course that is my personal opinion.Regards

I could have got it alot cheaper if I purchased it on disk but I ended up paying about £53-£54 GBP from PMDG website.

I fully agree with you! But due to the fact that the PMDG MD-11 boxed version is cheaper and does not even need an online activation, I have bought the box. If PMDG wants all the money they have to make sure that the download version is more attractive than the boxed version :( I was wondering about that before: Why is the MD-11 boxed version cheaper than the download version?GreetingsTim

Greetings
