Long Haul Time Compression

Featured Replies

Morn'n Folks, I want to try something new... I've been flying FS since maybe FS2 or FS3 - whichever was still monochrome - and - I've never used time compression and only dabbled with heavy's... Recently - with the great new Hawaii scenery from FSDreamteam - I've had the urge to make some pacific crossings... Once I get to altitude - I really don't think I'll have the patience to sit there for like five or six hours to make the journey in real time... Is there an easy way to run the time compression with RC4 running... I seem to recall some options in RC4 - but - I don't have them in front of me now... Is there a gauge available to make the compression easy ??? Ultimately - what would really be helpful would be to have the ability to quickly select a mileage from destination - then hit max compression and let the sim run until that mileage is hit - then pause the sim automatically... Then when the sim is started everything is up to date in the new position... You get to handle the interesting phases of flight - but - the four hours of radio frequency changes are compressed away... Is this possible and is there any way to actually make something like this happen ??? Any info on this topic would be appreciated...Regards,Scott

There's an option in RC Settings - Pause at Distance. Check that and enter a distance where you want RC to pause FS. Around 80-100 miles from ToD depending on your altitude. Try 200 miles as a starter. RC tends to want you down earlier than the CDU but that can be bypassed by requesting a PD when ordered down. You must be on manual comms to get that option though.Make sure you hand comms over to the co-pilot before you leave FS unattended. CTRL+SHIFT+K is the default. I would only accelerate once you're at cruise and make sure there are no large turns in your plan where you might miss the waypoint. I wouldn't go any faster than 4X otherwise the a/p might struggle. Use the default FS menu option to engage acceleration.Have fun!

Thanks Ray...I can't fly IFR anymore without RC4 - and - I would have missed that co-piot tip...Thanks... :biggrin:I'll gladly take any other transoceanic tips anyone wants to throw out...I normally run AISmooth and Autotower with RC4 - I guess they shouldn't have any issue keeping up either... Regards,Scott

I can't think of any other transoceanic tips. I also run AISmooth and Autower with no problems. When I feel the need for a long-haul flight I usually hop into Concorde. Around 3 hours from LAX to Hawaii. Big%20Grin.gif

What is Autower? This is the first I have heard of it? Is it something you recommend we all should use?

Scott,It's totally unrelated to RC but I would still recommend it for FS9 users. Unfortunately there is no version for FSX. It switches the Tower view during your flight which has been a long standing irritation for many FS9 users. You can find out more and download it here. http://christoph.ros...org/fs/autower/

Hi Ray, Had a chance to make my very first ocean crossing this past weekend - KLAX to PHNL... Great flight with RC4.x all the way... I used 8X compression once stable at altitude with a pause set for 250 miles out... I think I can move that pause in to about 175 miles and still be good for catching the descent phase of flight... I was flying at 36K on a real world flight plan from Flight Aware... I had to purchase the CS757 to do it though... First experience with a payware airliner too... Worked just like you said - thanks for the help... This opens all kinds of possibilities - LOL - there are sooo many facets to this hobby... Quick question on RC5 - if you know... Is RC5 going to provide any true traffic separation capability ??? Regards,Scott

Scott, good question, we have done several code variations on this point, and our beta team ATC controllers have not agreed that the separation routine is real world. As I have mentioned so many times in the forum, RC is pegged at being real world, not some gimmick. Just as an added note, we had AI separation planned for v4 but took it out because the routine lacked ATC rules. But we are working on that design.Bob

Hi Scott,Glad to hear it worked okay for you despite engaging X8 accel. You can probably tweak that pause distance but bear in mind RC will order you down probably earlier than the CDU's calculated ToD point. It is a great hobby. I'm in my 16th year and although I have a few periods away from it I always come back keen as mustard! And I've still to fly seriously with FSX. That's for retirement. Big%20Grin.gif
